There are various ways drugs get into prisons. Sometimes new people stash them inside themselves when they come into prison, they are also brought in through visits and thrown over fences in lower security prisons. I agree with you though, it seems to be an accepted thing though and I think drugs in prisons could be reduced if more effort was put in. |

There are various ways in which inmates get drugs in, through either corrupt officials or outside contractors who go into the prison to perform various jobs, still the most often used way is through visits the drugs are usually concealed mostly by a female the most common way is she hides it around on even in her virgina and whilst on the visit will pass it to the inmate he may try to "bottle it" which is plug it in his anus or swallow and later bring it back up by means of being sick or wait for nature to take its course the above happens more in CAT B prisons in lower category prison where the security is less it is far easier as some inmates work or attend outside facilities so an outsider can leave a "parcel" hidden outside and when one of the trusted inmates goes out will then retrieve the drugs, mobile etc. The thing is there are various drug testing procedures carried out by the officers like MDT mandatory drug test, sniffer dogs, random cell searches but the inmate is a very resourceful individual and with all that time to think they will often come up with crafty ways to get contraband in. It would be near on impossible to stop drugs getting ito jails as there are too many routes especially where you have people working there and as such be manipulated through either threat or money remember there are some very wealthy inmates serving sentences and in past cases officers have been and are still used to meet contacts outside who will pass the contraband and payment on to him or her, also outside contractors who have fallen for an inmate and then has been used to bring in goods secreted in book bindings, tapes etc, inmates will and have paid 100 pounds just for a bottle of alcohol, although they do make their own illegal "hooch" all they need is yeast again this is quite easy to get mainly from another inmate working in the prison kitchen, the hard part is avoiding the discovery of the "hooch" but again they put in place some very clever techniques. Don´t forget the inmates are there for breaking the law so they are in their element when employing similar techniqes to do so inside. |

There are quite a few different ways to get them in there. What surprises me even more is they are also having problems with cell phones getting into the prisons. |

As long as there is demand, there will be supply. |

Drugs keep people mellow contrary to the propaganda, and the gangs have a significant amount of control in the prisons anyway. |

I completely agree with you.
It has always surprised me that it happens - and surprises me even more that it continues.
I worked in General Management, and I know full well that if I had the will to eradicate some practice on the site I managed - that it could be achieved.
It simply needs the will, and the determination to see it through. I can only conclude that Prison Governors do not possess either. |

1st Go to the staff car park at any prison and see the cars on display. 2nd visit the staff homes and see how they live and holiday.and you will stop wondering. |

In most cases it is possible because the system is corrupt. Some of the guards are on the take. When any contraband is brought into the prison it is because it is allowed by the guards.I was a cop,and my brother was a prison guard in New York state. It was shocking what went on inside.Even if you were an honest guard, you did not rat out anyone. It is a never ending circle. |

My best friend works in a state penitentiary as a nurse and she says the inmate are very manipulative. They talk people who work there into smuggling stuff into them. Visitors are searched before they can come in, the only way they could be getting it is from the workers themselves. |

Visitors usually are able to get them in, whether it's family/friends or attorneys, lawyers, etc. They can smuggle them in by way of the crapper, or hide them in a hollow cell phone, or in paperwork that the staff doesn't properly check. There are a few corrupt guards that will bring it to the inmates. You also have outside vendors that never get checked that can bring them in. I heard a story of a guy that emptied port-a-johns would hide drugs in toilet paper rolls for inmates to find in the yard. |

Criminals are very very clever these days, Drugs can be hidden every where. One of my friends dad is a prison guard, they have found drugs hidden in the walls, on clothes, in Washing up Powder! There are many prisoners with many good contacts, people who work in the prison, Visitors, Laundrettes, Plumbers, Electricians ect. Drugs are worth ten times more in prison than on the street and so Prison Guards, Police officers - Who do regular "Searches" - will go to any lenghts to get the money. |

During my 5yr sentence the amount of drugs and easy availability was astounding, not to mention the huge numbers of users. It's big biz' and money so there is always folk prepared to get drugs into our prisons. Social visits is one and yes there is crooked prison staff who by carrying a parcel in can make large sums of £££'s I've seen so many routes used, from legal letters to various ingenious ways of hiding it in the mail.HMP has caused it's own problem with drug testing, ie;a cannabis joint can be detected up to 3wks later in urine, and heroin leaves the system in 3-4 days max' You do the math! |

Relax, I'm here now.

Because the guards are paid by the inmates to look the other way. |

Didn't you ever watch "Oz" on HBO?
Female visitors stuff plastic baggies full of drugs up their rear. They go to the toilet and flush the baggies (attached to a string). Someone in a lower level 'fishes' for the string with a coat hanger from their own toilets and hauls in the goods. The drugs are delivered and everyone is happy. Case closed.
Meanwhile, no one is allowed to smoke tobacco in Federal Prison anymore and the ban is strictly enforced.
As Homer would say, "Whoo Hoo!". |

If inmates are getting drugs, then the conclusion is simple, others are bringing them in. Visitors are throughly searched in the prison I visit but not vendors, guards and workers! So much money is spend on checking out visitors and then closing their eyes to where the REAL problem comes from. They punish prisoners but not the people who bring in the drugs. I feel it is because the system is corrupt and they do not want a scandal about the prison doing this. |
