How is life as a New Orleans Police officer?

Is it worth it, is the department corrupt, the community, or whatever can help me obtain a better picture as average life as an officer there.. I've been offered a job there, but have only heard bad things about their dept.. Also, I have no police experience but have just graduated from college.. Thanks for the help..

NOPD has had an image problem since the film "The Big Easy" was released in 1985. In the film, every single officer was on the take or worse, and the average person assumes it must be somewhat true even if they realize it's just a movie (fiction). Note that the script was originally set in Chicago, but CPD refused to cooperate because it made the deapsrtment look so bad. The producers then approached NOPD with a falsified sample script and were able to make the film in NOLA. The occasional real corruption/misconduct incidents only added to the bad reputation.
NOPD got a really bad rap from Katrina bacause about 15% of the police deserted. Realize that means 85% stayed and did their duty under apocalyptic conditions, and the ones who deserted were fired (so they are gone and you wouldn't have to work with them). Also, the Mayor directly & indirectly pushed blame for his administration's failings onto the average police officer, and the media bought the lies.
Most of NOPD's current problems are because Ray Nagin is still mayor and he & his administration are incompetent plus corrupt. It is a legacy from the pre-Katrina political establishment, which viewed Port au Prince, Haiti as the kind of city they wanted New Orleans to become.
However, Nagin is out in a year and we can hope for the best with whoever will be the next Mayor. The post-Katrina process of booting out the political crooks has been accelerating since Katrina, and has been helped by several federal investigations (ex. Congressman "Dollar Bill" Jefferson).
New Orleans is a great place to live and it's a guarantee you won't be bored working for NOPD.
The mayoral election of 2010 will be the most important election in the city's history because it will clearly indicate what path New Orleans will take into the future. If you accept the job with NOPD your probationary period will end shortly afer the new Mayor takes office. That means you could start looking for a police position elsewhere if things don't look good for the city.
