I live in the U.K and 7 years ago I got a speeding fine through the door with a court date. On the form it asked me if my address was different to the one shown. It was, I had my mail redirected due to the fact I had moved. I replied and gave my new address. I never heard anything again. A year later, I was informed by my old neighbor that the police had been looking for me. After some investigation, I discovered that the police ignored my the note I had sent informing them of my new address and assumed, as I replied to the original letter sent to my old address, that I must still live there and must be lying about my move (why ask then if they weren't going to believe my reply?) ANYWAY, I was convicted in my absence and got 3 points and a £200 fine which of course I was unaware of for years. I thought it was unfair as I didn't have a chance to defend myself due due their negligence so I left it. I have just applied for a job requiring a CRB check. I have had to put my maiden name down. Speeding tickets don't show on CRBs but will the police, being able to see my old name, look it up and see I have done a runner, look at my new address and come and arrest me? Or do you think that 7 years later they would have given up and filed it away?
Additional Details
Its not just a matter of paying, my insurance would go up and it wasn't me driving. I sent evidence of this but wasn't able to go to court as they didn't send details to new address. I don't know how to pay now its not just a case of going down to the station and paying up I need original ticket and to send off my licsence and it wasn't me driving! (ex)

You can blame the courts and police all you want for the fact that you failed to take responsibility for the speeding ticket. It is always in your best interest to follow up on something of this nature when you do not receive a response in a short period of time. You should have called the courts and inquired. I'm not sure about the UK, but unpaid tickets in the US can follow you for seven years (the statute of limitations). |

These things stay on the books for a long time, almost forever. They have a way of popping up when it is inconvenient for you. It is best that you hire a lawyer if you want to get it overturned, or just pay the fine and move on. Dwelling on the past is not good for anybody. |

Well, that is what cops are good at. I did not park my car on the street overnight, still I got a parking ticket. They even spelled my name wrong. |
