Today, every 17 seconds an American is arrested for a drug-related crime. That's about as long as it will take you to read this sentence.
There are now more than 2.3 million Americans in jail or prison. In fact, the United States now has the world's largest prison population.
China is second, with only 1.5 million people in jail. That's right, although the American population is roughly 300 million and China's is over 1.3 billion, we have nearly 50% more people in prison than China.
Since the early days of Nixon, we have gone from having less than one adult in prison per thousand to having roughly one adult in prison per hundred, more than 500% of the global median. Who says we don't lead the world in anything anymore?
Not all of the folks in prison are there for drug offenses, of course, but more than half of federal prisoners are locked up in connection with nonviolent drug offenses, frequently for mere possession. With profits from drug crime high enough to destabilize important democracies like Mexico and fuel terrorist groups like Afghanistan's Taliban, it will surprise no one that many non-drug crimes are themselves fueled by the profits of the drug business. Despite these labeling challenges, the Federal Bureau of Prisons lists more than 50% of its convicts as drug violators. Sweeping up explosives, arson, and weapons violations into a single category makes up the next-largest Bureau of Prisons grouping, at 15% of convicts. There can be no doubt that the War on Drugs consumes an outlandish percentage of federal and state law enforcement resources.

yeah it should do you know how much money the us spends a year to try and keep it out and how many times a year do you hear of a drug bust worth a lot of money not a lot so if the us legalized it thats millions + the new income of the marijuana it would help out the economy and it would put all of those dealers out a job

I wouldn't know since I do not do drugs.
However here are some other "benefits" of legalizing marijuana.
First they will have to pass new laws concerning driving and getting high, blood tests will be taken if pot is found at an accident costing the public more money.Insurance rates will increase because more people will be driving high.
Next, people who lose their jobs often by getting busted for being high ont he job(alcohol is legal but you can not go to work drunk) will eventually claim they are addicted and it is a "disease" like drinking putting many of them on disability at the tax payer's expense.
The Government in 1984 took in something like 12.3 million in revenue of alcohol.They turned around and spent out 89.8 million in the problems alcohol abuse causes.
What is wrong with that picture seeing all drinkers are not alcoholics?
I have seen people use their bill and grocery money to buy pot.If it is legalized it will be abused the same way alcohol is abused.
Alcohol was once prohibited and people made the claim the "only reason alcohol was abused was because of prohibition".
I used to live in Lenoir,N.C..There are 5 rehab centers in ONE BLOCK.
They got their liquor by the drink passed and there is no prohibition on alcohol there, hasn't been since the 40's.This tells me if you legalize pot, you will have the same problems you have with alcohol on a greater level.
