That is, how many police/law enforcement officers are there at all levels of government (local, city, county, state, and federal) in this country? Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that out of 307,212,123 persons currently in this country (*), roughly 500,000 are police officers (*2). Only 100,000+ are active at a time. And since it's true that we are responsible for our personal/individual safety and of those with us, it's impossible for 500,000 police to protect the remaining 306,712,123 citizens in this country individually. This means that the police are only responsible for protecting the general public/society as a whole and enforcing the laws (I don't mean any disrespect to police officers who do everything they can to protect us from criminal acts). If everything I said here is wrong, please correct me in a polite manner. If I'm still vague or not being specific on some things, politely let me know and I'll clarify. Now back to my question: How many police/law enforcement officers are there at all levels of government (local, city, county, state, and federal) in this country?
