Depends around here in Alabama, $26,000+ to start and increases at 2.5% per year for 10 years,plus Over time, so can make up to $68,000 a year working off days etc.

It depends on where you work, as the others have told you. If you are in a small department in a low population area, you will most likely not make all that much money. Taxes pay police salaries, less people= less taxes. The twist to that is, although less population tends to lead towards lower crime rates, I personally feel that officers in rural areas face just as much danger (if not more) due to their lack of available resources such as back-up officers. If you work Chicago, you have other officers available to assist you. If you were some corn-field in the middle of nowhere, it might take 30 minutes to an hour to get some help. Why you would work something like that for no pay is crazy. Might as well go work for in Houston and try to end up making something. I do believe I read that the national average is around 35 to 40 a year. Of course, probation officers like me, make next to nothing, but it is rewarding in other ways. People blame you for sending them back to prison just because the broke another law, what's so wrong with that?

Depends on the size of the Department, at its economic base! In the city of Houston Texas, rookie officer in the academy make 43,879.00 a yr plus incentives, that yr includes the academy and probationary period. At the end of that yr it bumps up to 48,000 - 50,000 depending on your education (wrong), plus you can work extra employment and overtime, which in most cases is another 20,000 if you work extra jobs on your work days only giving yourself two full days (best) off! As you ascend the ranks Sgt. 55,0000 Lt. 65,000 Capt 75,000 Asst Chiefs and Executive chiefs are in the 100,000 as a base!

I, as a Lt. with my education (Masters) seniority (??) earn right 116,000 as my base, kick in another 30,000 in OT, car allowance, clothing allowance 1200.00 monthly (14,4000 yearly), and hazard pay, do the math!!!!

It depends on where they work and their level of education and training. It can be as low as $25K a year and as high as $100K a year.

Work in a dangerous high crime area -- you get more. Work for Podunk PD and you'll most likely make way less.

Training and abilities such as SWAT, K9, Negotiations, Vice etc... as well as a college degree like an AA, AS, BA, BS and up make a HUGE difference.

Everyone starts at the bottom though. It's pretty much an even playing field going in.
