"Drivers who break the speed limit by a large margin could be given six penalty points, a consultation is expected to suggest, meaning they would be banned after two offences"

There is nothing wrong with the current rules and guidelines.
In the case of someone going way over the limits there is already the possibility to have them charged with a greater offence such as dangerous driving which carries a much greater punishment.
Speeding itself is not dangerous, the inappropriate use of speed can be.
For instance, 100mph on a dry, clear motorway is no more dangerous than 70mph but warrants a court case.
30mph at 3.30pm (or whatever time they finish) outside a school is potentially extremely dangerous but in most cases is legal.
They need to stop the speed kills mantra and start educating drivers properly in this country.

No present four offences is rite, two is too low. But present fines should be increased to something like one month's wages for your first offence & 2 months wages for your second, 3 months for third etc.so these twerps on £100,000+ per year are hit much much harder in pocket, witch will be far more effective a deterrent than points on there licences. |

If you are paying so little attention to the road, that you can't spot a police officer, camera or static van far enough away to slow down to the speed limit, let alone stop... Then exactly how can you argue anything other than 'guilty'....?
A caught speeder is a dangerous speeder, because they clearly aren't looking at what's in front of them. |

I think it should depend on how fast you are going, ie. 6 points for 20 - 30 over the limit, 3 for under that. A ban should come in if you over the limit by 30 mph, even if it is a short ban say 1 month to make it inconvenient. But motorway speed limits should be higher. |

I speed all the time. Not silly speeds, I do 35-40 in a 30 for example, but only when it's safe to do so. Same goes for going slower in a 40, when it's busy or there are kids coming out of school. I think a little speeding doesn't hurt but someone doing 70 in a 30 zone should be banned. |

It should depend on how many miles a year you drive. I drive 30,000 a year, mainly work. Which is 3 times more than the average.
I have 6 points for speeding. Does that make me a more dangerous driver than my Dad who has 3 points for speeding and yet does about 5,000 miles a year?
No - it doesn't. If government is going to review the speeding laws then lets do it properly. One of my speeding offences was for driving at 25 in a 20 zone (which is a margin of over 20%) the other one was for driving 37 in a 30 zone (again a margin of 20%). I accept that these are wrong and paid the fine accordingly Should these genuine mistakes be treated the same as drink driving or dangerous driving and result in the loss of my job and lively hood? |

I've been caught twice. Both times I was just 6 mph over the limit. I had to choose between a fine and going on a course. Hardly fair in my opinion. I was at no way putting myself at risk or other drivers. It should only be a punishment for people going severely over the limit. |

then keep in the speed limit, its there for a good reason. Two offences and banned for six months.
for the thumbs down, well people who travel over the limit in built up areas often don't realise or don't care they risk lives, particularly children, if your child was killed by a motorist doing 38 miles and hour in a 30 mile an hour zone, wouldn't you think if only they had not been speeding. Its right that that it might not save them, but you have a better chance of survival if the motorist is not speeding in heavily populated areas. And the thousands of people who are killed on the roads each year, their families are left devastated. |

Fine, people who speed & get caught should take their medicine, getting caught shows a lack of forethought and demonstrates the person is not suited to driving at speed.
After 10 years of hooning and no points I'm now off touch some wood... |

Rules are there for a reason. We have very few deterrents in this country so maybe this will work here. |

I believe in cause and effect.
There are worse effects from speeding. |

Well, I got banned after four goes in three years. The only accident I have ever had, mind, was when I was hit by a speeding police car down a country lane. It pushed me 50 yards down the road and through a hedge. I understand the police driver, who had an accident prevention officer accompanying him, was 'reprimanded'. Needless to say, I received no compensation. 15 (sic) police vehicles arrived to watch. Just in case.
I think the most important thing is to have the speed limits clearly marked. On two of the occasions I was caught, it was on a dual carriageway I had not used for a while and the speed limit had been reduced from 60 to 40. On the last occasion I was clocked by a secret little coffee circle sat in an unmarked van when I put my foot down to get away from a speeding lorry. What is particularly galling though, is that if you are rich enough, you don't get banned, witness, Fred, John Barnes et al.
Still, it is nice to get the bus. People are more considerate, give up their seats, and thank the driver. Ah, the socialist days of yore. |

I agree.after two convictions for speeding then a ban should be enforced.
But there is a problem. Will this stop young persistant joyriders? |

I think they should use different coloured tarmac or markers for each speed limit and that the police should be seen at all times when checking for speeders [lights on warning of a speed check] and in favour of the authorities when caught speeding 3 points on the licence and an instant 30 day ban starting from the time of the offence £30 fine and a £60 storage fee for your motor in a compound [there are a lot of old airfields around that could be use for this purpose] But then the authorities want you to speed because of the millions £s $s they make out of speeders.
If we were all good and didn't break the law, income TAX would go UP |

Never, the speed limit is there for every ones protection, except where Ken Livingstone deliberately reduced it to cause extra traffic congestion so that he could tax it. I know of two clear straight roads, one nearly 1 mile long, with no housing or schools, and with only a single road junction along it where he reduced 40 to 30 mph and promptly put in mobile camera checks. |
