My sister was seen by school officials walking off of school property at 9am. NO ONE MADE ANY ATTEMPT TO STOP HER. She is with someone else that also attends that school (another female) but she is 18 years old. My sister is only 15. It is now after 5pm there and no one can find my sister anywhere. Does 24 hours have to pass before a Amber Alert can go out? The PD is telling them that even if it is a child, they still have to wait 5 hours. That just seems crazy. Please Help.

EDIT: ment to say, the PD IS TELLING THEM THEY STILL HAVE TO WAIT 24 (NOT 5) HOURS BEFORE A CHILD CAN BE PUT OUT ON A AMBER ALERT.

It is not accurate to say that an AMBER alert goes out immediately any time a child goes missing. There are criteria that must be met to be eligible for an AMBER alert. In California (and I suspect everywhere), those criteria are:
AMBER ALERT is intended only for the most serious, time-critical child abduction cases.
AMBER ALERT is not intended for cases involving runaways or parental abduction, except in life-threatening situations.
Criteria for activating an AMBER ALERT
Law enforcement agencies ensure these conditions are met before activating an AMBER ALERT:
The investigating law enforcement agency confirms an abduction has occurred.
The victim is 17 years of age or younger, or has a proven mental or physical disability.
The victim is in imminent danger of serious injury or death.
There is information available that, if provided to the public, could assist in the child's safe recovery.
