The best way to avoid getting shot is to distance yourself from the shooter. Move around a lot if you can help it--ducking behind soft cover or going prone merely makes you a still target, and MUCH easier to hit. Soft cover constitues anything that a bullet can penetrate. Doors, tables, chairs, etc. are all soft cover. If hard cover is available, such as concrete walls or something similar, get behind it if possible.
Just keep moving, whatever you do, and always seek to escape the situation. Move as quickly and as erratically as possible, changing direction, diving into a roll, pushing off of walls quickly, and anything else you can think of to make yourself as difficult to hit as possible. If there's an open window, jump out of it. A second-story fall will hurt, but is not likely to be fatal. Three stories or greater is a gamble though. |

Stand behind the gun.
Laying on the ground let's the bad guy walk up to you and shooting closer.
Run like hell is a thought.

Run like a scared cat, hide, make yourself as small a target as possible.
Or shoot back.
Remember: Gun Control means hitting your target.
Support gun owner's rights! |

Bullets have no eyes as we all know. Cover and staying down is the best bet. I have gone over this with my son numerous times, he is in Middle School.
I was in a shooting and was five yards from my assailant - I started shooting at him just to get him to stop shooting at me.
Cover and concealment. |

First off, don't tease people and piss them off.
And if they do start shooting, duck down behind a large barrier of some sort. |

take cover asap and run in a swiggly crazy line so that it'll be hard for them to aim and get you. (like on the movie apocalypto when they're throwing spears at them) |

Don't stop moving, a moving target is harder to hit, especially since in a school an enraged child with a gun probably wouldn't have the best aim.
Guns in schools is terrifying. |

Cover & Concealment.
Take cover behind something that will stop the bullets, or at least hide where you cant be seen.
Shoot back? |

I will suggest that PREVENTION is probably the best protection: Make sure your school is doing things like making a plan for a lockdown, and sharing it with everybody involved and PRACTICING it periodically. Also, make sure they are monitoring the students to keep tabs on who might be exhibiting "signs." With all of the demands on the schools these days--stemming from things like the No Child Left Behind Law--basic security gets swept under the rug until a catastrophe happens somewhere.
As to what to do in case there is an actual gunman in the area: get behind a solid locked door and try not to piss him off in any way. (I'm serious.) Running away from the danger zone is probably a good idea, but beware he might have accomplices lying in wait. |

Escape is always the best way to go. Obviously she is a child and WILL not have her own gun to shoot back. She needs to try to get to another room as fast as she can. She also needs to be more aware of what is around her as most kids her age are in their own little world. |

If someone is shooting at you, find cover and concealment. Get behind an object that will sufficiently cover and protect your body. If there is a way out, get to it as quickly as possible, and try ( it would be hard) to stay quiet.
EDIT: mJc...that may be true for Virginia Tech, but that didn't help in Columbine ( i was there) |

There is no answer to your question, other than to put distance between you and the shooter. And if you can't get away, hide behind anything large enough and thick enough.
Myself I rather not die as a sitting duck. MYSELF that is. In a lose lose situation, I would charge the shooter. |

Even if you're behind something like a wall or even a tree, don't just squat down, get into the prone position and lie on your stomach with your head down. |

any mentally affected person with a gun will usually shoot it at some-one in their line-of-sight , any-way...my advice = RUN , and Fast , away from the Danger-zone..!
A light-hearted approach to this Q. would be....
1. don`t stand in Front of the Gun.
2. make sure that no-one is standing `behind` the Gun.
3.......... Aim well and Shoot First...! |

Hello,
When we were kids guns were at our schools all the time!
Kids would go hunting after school.
Hopefully the one doing the shooting is a good shooter and not shooting my way.
Other wise laying on the floor playing possum is a good idea!
Many copy cats out there who see the shootings in the news and think it is a way for them to get attention..... |

You are correct. Immediately drop to the ground and then roll to cover. If not in the area of shooting, secure (lock) the room and seek an escape route. |

I agree with you. It is so sad that people bring guns to school. |

Responding to indirect fire: Run away and zig zag a little bit while you run. It is harder to hit a moving target than a stationary one. Get to a safe place and take cover.
Direct fire: Get down in the prone position (Laying flat on your stomache) preferably behind something and in a low area such as a fox hole.
Don't stop in the KILL ZONE at all if you can avoid it.
If in a vehicle: Just keep driving! Put the peddle to the floor and drive the hell out of the area! You can stop about Three miles down the road, or when ever you find the safest location, then assess the damages.
If the road is blocked: Push through the road block and keep driving. If that is not posible, get out of the vehicle on the non-enemy contact side of the vehicle and get into the ditch if posible. Make sure you have your rifle. Then identify the enemy. Make sure you have PID (Positive Identification) of the shooter and blast the hell out of them! |

good lord--you must have had a heart attack after hearing about guns at your kids school!! The only way to reduce the possibility of being shot is to make yourself as small a target as possible or by taking cover behind an extremely thick wood or metal object, such as a door or bookshelf.
there are many gun forums that you can google to get step-by-step instructions on keeping your cool under fire that you need to read and have your daughters look at. |

Don't go to school until the issue is resolved. If everyone did the same, then the School Authority would have to do something, not just utter banalities, but something like Security Guards and Detection scanners. I don't think anyone should have to put up with their personal security being threatened.
Be proactive. If someone has to go to the school then teach them to act on their gut instinct. If someone there doesn't seem right, then avoid them or if they feel uneasy about a situation then get out. Act on it because your brain is telling you something! |

What high school was that at? Sheesh. If you can't make a run for it then definitely get under sometihng for cover and play dead (that's how one of the students at Virginia Tech survived). |

Krav Maga is useful for real life situations.
You need to redirect the barrel and get out of the line of fire, hopefully disarming them. This is assuming you are point blank. If they are farther away. Run in a horizontal path to them. |

Yup.. drop and roll for cover, while you hope the guy does not have good aim.

Yup keep moving but it depends on how close they are when you see them, hiding behind a desk is BS coz most bullets will go straight thru....find something like a paper weight or chair and throw it at the bugger then run like hell (zig zag style) till you get to safety. |

The trick is to carry a bigger weapon!! I also think that being on the butt end of a weapon is much better than being at the end of the barrel. |
