How to tell if someone is telling lies?

Don't listen to all of the answers above. They are all dependent on the lier feeling guilt. The truth is that there is no one sign but rather many that are specific to the different emotions that should be felt by a normal human in that situation. There is a book called "Telling Lies". You should find it more than informative. |

First sign is the lack of eye contact, they will look away. Also they may show physical signs like sweating or blushing. |

first ask yourself, "Is this person a politician?" if the answer is yes then the person is lying. |

With some people like lawyers and cops for instance their lips are moving. With others it takes a psychological study of their body language and choice of words |

• If you believe someone is lying, then change subject of a conversation quickly, a liar follows along willingly and becomes more relaxed. The guilty wants the subject changed; an innocent person may be confused by the sudden change in topics and will want to back to the previous subject.
• Using humor or sarcasm to avoid a subject.
Signs of Deception:
Body Language of Lies:
Physical expression
avoid making eye contact
Hands touching their face, throat & mouth. Touching or scratching the nose or behind their ear.
Emotional Gestures & Contradiction
Verbal Context and Content
• A liar will use your words to make answer a question. When asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers, “No, I did not eat the last cookie.” |

If their nose starts growing, that's a sure sign. |

Usually, unless they are very good, engage them in a lengthy discussion about the subject where you pose the same questions repeatedly only with different wording and they'll usually have conflicting variations. They'll lie themselves into a corner before they realize what they've done...always a fun way to spend the afternoon. If its about a series of events, get detailed about the time line, that's usually a riot too! |

Watch their eyes. There's been studies done that my grandpa told me about. Ask them a logical question that they have to think about, and watch which way their eyes look. Then ask them a memory question, and again, watch the direction their eyes move. And then ask them something that you know they'll make up, and do the same thing. Now ask them the question you're trying to see if they're lying about, and watch. And there you go. It always works for me, at least. |

Don't really think this belongs in Law Enforcement (unless you're a cop who's trying to figure it out), but oh well. Look at the eyes. If they avoid eye contact, they're generally lying to you. Also, looking to the right means they're using their imagination, possibly coming up with a lie, particularly if they're looking down and right.. It's a reflex action, so unless you're conscious of it, you won't be able to stop yourself. Looking to the left means recalling something from memory, so while they COULD be telling the truth, they might also be recalling a prepared story. Ask some related questions that they're probably not prepared for to be sure in this case. |

Experience, and knowledge of the individual. You can also try reading a book on body language. Also keep in mind, it's easier to tell the truth, than remember a lie. |

Look for body language that might indicate someone is lying, such as not looking you in the eye when speaking to you, being fidgety, or acting nervous or uncomfortable.
Listen for inconsistencies in what the person tells you, such as different stories on different days, different time frames, mistakes in remembering details or mixing up details.
Notice if the person steadfastly resists answering any questions. Extreme defensiveness could mean that he or she is trying to hide something.
Consider asking directly if the person has lied to you. Many people feel bad getting caught up in lies, and find it a relief to finally be honest. |

If you know the person well, you can tell by the simplest of things, the eyes. If they dont make eye contact the whole time, they blink alot, or their eyes are wider than normal. If you dont really know them that well or not at all, the body language is what sets people off and makes it easy to rat themselves out. Look for constant hand movement that doesnt involve making a gesture. It taking a long time to come up with an obvious simple answer, this is why you always want to catch them off guard.
Also look at if they are talking differently, like studdering, being at a loss of words, etc. But mainly either way its the eyes and breathing pattern. When a person gets real deffensive, its usually because they are guilty of the situation or something that is linked to the situation. All these things tie into each other, also if you are a manager or you are talking privatly with them, try to get them to sit down while you stand. The reason why authority figures get you to do this is because when a person is the one seated, they automatically feel guilty of something.
Which is why I always prefer to stand when I speak or am spoken to, I make sure that my heart and breathing is under control, I always have eye contact and my hands are visible, yet still. There are easy ways to tell a lie without getting caught, by simply understanding how to tell if someone is lying, you will be able to tell the biggest lie without anyone knowing about it. But you shouldnt lie, and laugh at the ones you catch lying. |
