How would I go about being a firefighter, if I got training in the military?

Would I be able to use that experience to begin hunting jobs in firefighting, and also how does one actually go about "applying" for a job as a firefighter because I assume it is not like applying for any other job

It's like applying for any job where there's a physical agility test and a test to see if you can handle the technical information. In some places, it's a civil service exam.
Survey some departments where you'd like to work. And go by some stations in those places and talk to the crews. Just tell them you are looking to be a firefighter, and just sit back see what they say about their department. You can learn a lot by observing the attitudes of the crews. Ask particularly is they also operate EMS and if all firefighters do a tour in EMS, depending on if that's an issue for you.
In a good department, it's a ball, if you like big machinery and operating in critical missions with a team. |

In a civil service town/city being in the military is almost required. If you go to a non civil service it would help. Civil service chooses in this order-
Fallen fathers- basically anyone related to someone who has died on duty.
Military- they will be first choice after fallen fathers.
Minorities- Women, Hispanics, African American etc.
Paramedics- Anyone with paramedic status will be picked before majority.
EMT- EMT status will help
Majority- The rest will be put at the bottom of the list. |
