How would law enforcement go about finding next of kin?

A friend of a friend passed away. He had no contact with his family. How would the police go about finding next of kin? I'm just curious. Thanks
Additional Details
ADD: He rented an apartment, no next of kin listed. He was in the ER Sunday morning, no next of kin listed there either.

I would think there would be papers in his apartment - birth certificate, investments, insurance, maybe, that would show relatives.

If not, the police probably have access to that information.

Also, when you get a job they usually ask for an emergency contact.

The relatives usually crawl out of the woodwork when theres a death and money may be involved.Law Enforcement will do nothing to locate someone and that would be up to your friend to hire someone to locate a next of kin.If your friend is the closest relative you can contact the IRS and let them know and they will have your friend come down and show proof that he is related. It may take awhile but if no one else comes forward and there is any money left it will go to your friend. The internet is great when it comes to finding people and sitting down for a day you can usually do this yourself..If your friend knows the school he attended they will have parents listed or the last place he worked, contact them for any info..Check with the local police dept to see if there were any arrest and who got him out..Hope I helped some

Thy will use his Social Security Number and go to a database that they can access to try and locate first. They will then fax a notice to the local police department in the town where his relatives show as living. They are usually fairly good at getting hits this way. It is a lot easier since the computer age. These things used to take forever, now...with a social security number, they are usually able to locate next of kin quickly.

We search the apartment. For many we get information that might result in a lead.
Often the post office can give information on previous residences, which sometimes leads to family info.

The ME can and does get all medical records which they can decide to share with LE. Old records often have info on them as do birth certificates etc.
Original information from SSN sometimes proves helpful.

Often, somehow, family members hear of the possibility of a death and are put in contact with the ME's office. They then learn who the next of kin or friends are.

International database with list of names. Or, they could Google the name.
