I'm 17 and have a child. I want to be a police detective will I still be able to? Will this be tricky because I'm a teen mom? I have a lot of dedication so I will be willing to work hard. I want to work homicides by the way. Any help would be great and also the easiest way to go about becoming a detective. Thanks

What does a regular police officer do? I am confused on that part. Like a traffic cop? I know I have to be one for a while but thats okay with me I just don't really know what they do...

First you have to be a regular police officer, often times for several years, before you make it to the rank of Detective. Is that something you are willing to do? |

Police officer: Upholds the law, protects the citizens and their property. Does issue citations for traffic violators, etc.. They are usually first responders to crimes and victims.
As far as being a detective, its basically a ladder. You have to climb the chain of command that will eventually lead you to be an homicide detective.
As far as being a mom, theirs nothing wrong with that. The only thing i will warn you is the constant shift work, schedule change and long hours. Good luck! |

There are lots of moms out there who are pursuing a career. Since you are young you will get to the top faster if you are sincere in your quest. Having a child will make it a little harder but knowing millions of women have a family and a career shows it is not impossible. Having a child is not against the law so I doubt if it will have any bearing on your qualifications. Some colleges even have day care. So go for your dreams. |

No not at all, but it would come after you became a police officer, having children in no way will effect your ability to become a detective!!!!!!!!!!! Police officers are the first line of defense. The officers patrol streets take the reports that detectives work cases from. Officers on patrol make more arrests then any detective will in a lifetime! Patrol officers are first to the scene before SWAT comes out! I could go on and on, suffice it to say patrol officers are what makes the dept. breath!!!!!! |
