How does killing a dozen people before taking your life solve any problems? Why does this seem like an attractive option all of a sudden?

same reason a guy would enter a nursing home and shoot innocent old folks, or go to a college or high school and shoot students
we may never understand why these folks "think" that shootings are their only answer. |

You are asking a very rational question in a rational state of mind. For a person to contemplate killing a dozen others and then taking his own life, he obviously is NOT rational. In his own mind, he believes he is "getting even" with someone or something but he also has just enough sense left in him to know what the law will do and he kills himself at the end.
You can't validate an action like this solely because the person who kills in this manner is NOT using any rational thought other than some form of vengence.
