I'm interested in becoming a psycoligist 4 the police department. I dont have a clue wear to start. Any ideas?

You'd have to go to school for Criminal Justice and with that there should be a division for Psychology. On the other hand, it'd look a lot better on your resume if you had a degree in both. I don't know where you are located so I can't tell you anything but there are plenty of online schools that offer degrees in Criminal Justice so I'd say that would be a good place to start. if your talking about a "psychologist for criminals", (ive never heard of one for the police), then this is where you start. and first of all you will have a hard time getting any jobs in psychology with only a 4 year.
your best bet is to try and get into a university. i also hope that you know, you will becoming a "mind doctor", so you will also need some form of a phd.

my cousin is on her way to become a clinical psychologist. here is what she has done and what she has left to do.
4 years at university for psychology degree.
2 years experience in intake patients while still taking psychology classes. write thesis, finish thesis.
1 year of pysch classes, also with 2 days a week internship at a psychology department. write and finish dissertation.
1 year of full internship at a department.

most scholorships that you apply for will have you work someone for a year or 2 after you fully graduate. but...it will be worth the hard work...you will be bringing in the cash!!

The best thing to do is contact the Police Department Personel Office that you want to work for. They will tell you what kind of degrees you need and give you all the information you need, or go to their website and you will find the information there too.

Psychologists don't usually work for police departments, sometimes some might consult. But someone doesn't just get a degree in psychology and suddenly become a "profiler"

Those people are generally academic types who teach criminology or forensic psychology and work for state or federal agencies and consult to police departments. Some departments may contract with professors on cases where the services may be needed.

To get there you have to get your PhD in Criminology, Social Psychology, Industrial Psychology, or something similar, demonstrate your competence by publishing something useful, maybe teaching for a few years.

I know patrol officers who have graduate degrees in psych and sociology.

Yes, you can get a job as a police psychologist without being a police man.

Email the police department in the state you want to work to see if they can give you any hints. Plus, your universities admissions centre should put you on the right track.

The three jobs you have mentioned: 1. Psychology; 2. Criminal Justice; 3. Profiler are all very different jobs, even though may appear compatible.

Psychology and Profiling could fit together well, but Criminal Justice is a law degree - somewhat out of the way of Psychology.

Your best bet to be placed in a police environment (rather than lawyer environment) would be to do a double degree of Criminal Psychology which will probably take 5 years.

But remember - it will be hard work and is not something to be taken lightly.

YOU COULD READ CRIMINAL PSYCHOLOGY THE CLASSES YOU WOULD HAVE TO TAKE, WOULD BE VARIOUS COURSES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE, SOCIOLOGY AND A FEW PSYCHOLOGICAL CLASSES TO UNDERSTAND HOW THINGS WORK. ALSO, YOU WOULD NEED ATLEAST A MASTERS OR P.H.D
