I've lost my watch getting out of my car at the train station - what should i do??

I had my watch sat on my lap and i was wearing a skirt. It must have slipped out of the car when i got out and i didn't realise. My local police station was shut today so i left a message on their answer machine saying that i'd lost it and leaving my phone number. I've also left a message at two local businesses which are right next to where i'll have dropped it. Is it against the law to put up a poster there leaving my mobile number saying i've lost my watch?

Help, i really want it back

Thanks for all the advice so far - i must now add that my particular train station does not actually have a station! There is no ticket lady/man and no one handing out free papers. It's just a stop with a shelter, a seat, a timetable and a bin.

Go to the local police station when it is open and ask to report your watch lost. They will complete a lost report. Anything subsequently found will be checked against lost and stolen property. That way if it does get handed in they will have your details and you will be reunited with your watch.

well I know for a fact if you position yourself towards the north..lick your thumb and stick it straight ahead of you then you will be able to tell what time it is..like right now..its 9:21am central..

Look at your house insurance policy you may be covered, if all else fails claim it on your insurance at least the money may make a small difference to your loss.

are you insured for loss of things away from home maybe someone will hand it in to a police station or lost property at the train station if not ,maybe you can claim on your insurance if you have one of course

Any ideas? Buy a new one. But really now a days only a few people will return things left by other person, with the rising prices and oil price hike. Life on earth is really getting harder.

No it is not against the law to put up poster of things you lost and leaving your mobile number, but cautious also for people claiming to have your watch some will just fake it and demand money in return of your watch and they will even insist you meet them on a deserted road or in a cafeteria or just around the corner. DON'T BE FOOLED with these scheme because some of them or all of them are robbers and thieves just waiting for you to appear and them wham!!! You not only lost your watch, you lost your life too.

For my own opinion, forget about your watch. Even if it has sentimental value it is just a material thing, I just suggest buy a new one. Next time be careful where you place your valuables ok. Only people are more valuable than watches or gold in these world, you lost one you loose all. But watches and pearls can be replace except people you love ok.

silly question but have you been to look for it? have you asked in the station to see if it's been handed in? was it insured? is it valuable? have you looked in the car? if it was found and stolen i don't honestly think you'll be seeing it again - the police won't do much more than log your call - sounds like you've done all you can - sorry

well fly posting is actually illegal...but if it were me...i'd put a notice up anyway...what's the worst that could happen?

i think you have done all that you can...maybe an ad in the local free paper...there are honest people around - so you might be lucky.

Go back and look for it! If it's not there, the police aren't going to find it(they'll just ask if you have looked for it) - if someone has handed it in, they will just put it in the property book - you can go and ask when they are open. Go back and ask at the station, someone is more likely to have handed it in there than the police sation! Do not put your mobile number up in a puiblic place unless you want some dodgy calls!
