I've recently received a parking ticket and when I try to pay by phone, they say it is not in the system?

I parked in my school parking lot without paying the $2 because the machines are usually faulty and I had to rush to class. When I got back a couple hours later there was a parking ticket on my windshield. I am now trying to pay it by phone, but whenever I enter in the number of the citation, they say the citation was not found in the system.

Why would this be?

A lot of the time it just takes a while for the processing staff to enter it in the system. You can either go to the local PD and pay it there, or you can just wait a week or so for the ticket to be entered into the system.
