I am a new driver, and a police came up behind me with the sirens on....?

Hey,
I am a brand new driver (just got my license), and I follow all the rules & speed limits, but a police car was a few cars behind and then it came up behind me with its lights & sirens on (I pulled to the side to let it pass-but honestly I thought he was pulling me over for some reason!), but then it passed by me and the sirens & lights went OFF!! What does this mean? Did I do something wrong?

It seems like he was after me, but then he passed and turned everything off like nothing happened! I'm confused (and still shaking-I was so nervous!)

I know he wanted me to get out of the way, I was just wondering if I did something wrong then he suddenly turned his siren off. I really do know what sirens mean. Just for clarification (Your Worst Nightmare) :)

He was probably assigned an emergency call, where he was required to respond with lights and sirens, and the call may have been cancelled, or another unit may have arrived there before him, and cancelled the emergency run.
Either way, you did exactly the right thing by pulling to the side.
It's perfectly normal to be a little shaken, especially if you are a new driver. It's commendable that, even though you were nervous, you did the right thing!

As a former EMT (not police officer), we have turned on our lights and sirens we going to a call. Shortly after getting the call, we have been told by communications, that our services were not needed. So we cut off lights, and sirens. And continue to wherever we were going before.
Of course I do know police, fire, EMS use their lights and sirens, to get through stoplights, and heavy traffic.
Before anyone says this is not done, I have been in an ambulance, and a fire engine when done.
And saw a police officer, go through a light, with sirens on. To continue a few blocks down and pull into a fast food restaurant. I happen to be going to the same fast food restaurant, and I went inside and he was in line, ordering his food.

Numerous times cops get a call to go to an emergency, but before they get there someone else has determined it is not an emergency. When that happens they have to turn the lights and siren off. Cop cars behind you will always make you nervous, even when you are doing nothing wrong.

Breathe....You'll probably have a lot of scares on the road, being a new driver. You did the right thing by pulling over. Same goes for ambulances and fire trucks. You'll be surprised by the people who don't pull over and let them go by. Good Luck to you, glad to know you are a courteous driver!

The Officer could have been given a "Code 3" call and was in route lights and sirens, and at the time you puled over the call was canceled

Maybe he had a call then all of a sudden it was cancelled.

It could have been a numerous of things, a call canceled, a car resembling yours involved in a crime, he checked your vehicle and tag number and you were not the one he or they wanted. some wise guy may have done this to get by, it is not legal but I know a few that have done this. Or he could have been on a call and turned off the siren because he did not want to alert the suspect he was close and for them not to be aware he was near. Do not get to worried as long as you abide by the law everything should be okay.

He wanted you to move...This has happened to me numerous times...But unless he had en emergency to respond to...he was acting incorrectly...and do not let policemen scare you...

i have seen the same thing many times. don't stress seeing how you were following he traffic laws. But comeing from many of my cop friends and the cops I know on base, they all say that there are some that will use there lights to go faster or go through traffic lights. Other times they turn on just the lights to get somewhere faster then turn them off so they can come up on a situation (like a robbery) with out being noticed.

He was in a hurry to get to a call and just needed you to move over. The only way for him to get you to move was to activate his emergency equipment.

you should have known the answer to this before getting behind the wheel.......he wanted you to get the he** out of his way........he had a call
