I am in the hiring process for CBP officer. One of my references recently got arrested.?

I have a clean record all the way around. Good credit, never been in trouble with the law etc. One of my references recently got arrested and I just found out. Will that affect me in the hiring process for CBP officer. What should i do? The only thing pending is my VBT and Background investigation. Any info will be truly appreciated. I'm freaking out. Been waiting for this job my whole life.

How would my BI find out if my personal reference has been arrested? Do they conduct background investigations on references also?

This is about you and not them. Having said that, I was the security officer for a major police force that did these security background checks . . . and yes, we checked all your references on the various police data systems; immediate relatives as well anyone who we knew was in your life. Having said that, should something negative appeared on those other people's files there were two concerns addressed with the applicant:

1. What was your involvement with that person? If that person had a record for possession and/or trafficking in narcotics, what was your role? (birds of feather flock together). Did you do anything bad with that person? And, it depends what he got arrested for. If he had an impaired driving charge and never appeared in court, or paid the fine . .not really a problem from your end. But if it was anything to do with certain crimes from being gang related to drugs or firearms . . you will be on the hot seat.

2. The other issue is how much influence does that person have on you? This is a good question if a sibling had a (bad) criminal record. We would be looking at how much does you brother or sister influence you and could they get you do to do certain things like supply information from police investigations to running names on the police data systems. Many new police (enforecment) officers from other cultures have a difficult time to decide where their loyalties lie, whether it's to the department you are employed or family. Too often they choose family and then get into trouble.

So to answer your question: it depends on what that person was arrested for. If you have yet to go in for an interview and when you do, they may ask if there is anything else you want to tell them before it starts. I would come clean about your recent knowledge of this person being arrested. If it was for something you knew nothing about, no sweat, just tell them that. If you don't tell them and they find out, your "Honesty and Integrity" will come to be questioned and just the fact you never told them is more series than that person being your reference. It can snowball into something bigger.

Not the best choice to list them, but as long as you're squeaky clean you should be cool. Just let your recruiting officer know that you had no idea that this person would do something like that.
