I want to have other career possibilties besides law enforcement. So I am debating a degree in Criminal Justice or Political Science??

I think you could really do either, but you can also have degrees in computer related fields and business and still be in law enforcement. I would at least minor in CJ. With today's technology, a lot of departments are looking for people who have knowledge of things like business and computers. That would leave the door open also for you to choose another career if you wanted to. You could always see if your local sheriff or police chief will talk to you about it. |

I'm not sure what a degree in Criminal Justice involves. But if you're after career possibilities a degree in Political Science, like many Bachelor of Arts degrees, leaves the door wide open but doesn't really give you a real career path. I don't know if Criminal Justice is different.
2 cents: like any highly regulated career, like medicine or civil service, there is a very distinct sub-culture that goes with law enforcement, and like any such sub-culture it can be problematic in that it encourages certain assumptions and can lead to individuals in that profession losing touch with the people they're supposed to be serving. If you're doing a BA at a liberal arts university, you'll probably have the opportunity to take a course that deals with that type of thing in some respect, no matter what you major in. I highly recommend that you take it, it will give you a much complex, challenging, and ultimately gratifying approach to your chosen field. |
