1. Radar detectors are useless. The radar units in use today get a reading in less than a quarter of a second. We don't drive around with the units turned on... when we visually see a speeding vehicle, we use the radar to confirm it. By the time your detector, you're already tagged.

2. Most officers I know who stop a vehicle with a radar detector are more likely to issue the operator a citation due to his/her obvious usage of the unit to attempt to avoid citations from operating over the posted limits.

3. Doesn't matter if it is a $25 detector or a $500 detector.... they don't work. When it goes off, you've already been nailed.

I don't think so - because he really can't pull you over/cite you without having the probable cause... I probably wouldn't cite one for having a radar detector.... they are legal in California.....

But I would probably have a good chuckle about it later.

Although the radar detector companies all brag about how good their systems are, I don't need more than 2 seconds to estimate your speed and lock the radar onto your vehicle - a lot less time than it takes for you to respond to the detector after it goes off.

...not trying to be a smarta$$, that's just how it works.

The only advantage a radar detector provides is a warning that a car in front of you has been 'examined' by a radar cop...the energy from the radar gun goes beyond the target vehicle and can therefore be detected.

If it's your car that's tagged, you cannot act quickly enough - it's too late.

Unless illegal in your area, if a cop pulls you over, the presence or lack of a detector is unimportant...he's already got you.

Radar detectors are illegal in most jurisdictions. If this is the case in your area, you will get fined and the police are able to seize the device.

The easiest way to find out if you are within the law is to contact your local law enforcement agency. You can also look through your state statues or local ordinances, but that will require more work.

They may or may not be more likely to issue a citation. If I ever got pulled over, I would take my radar detector down as a precaution.
All the law enforcement officers say they only need a quarter of a second to two seconds to clock your vehicle. Only a small percentage of cops use that mode of radar. It's called Instant On. Most cops are too lazy to sit and push a button continuously. The best way to avoid Instant On is to follow someone else that's speeding so that if they get hit with Instant On you will have a little time to react.
