Write down the serial number on the gun and take it to the local police department. They can run the number and will tell you who it is registered to, you will be in and out in about 5 minutes.

The reason I say write it down is because I would not ever take a firearm inside a police station, with a permit or not.

If you have a permit to carry concealed, take it to the local police dept.

LEAVE IT IN YOUR CAR WHEN YOU GO IN TO ASK ABOUT IT.

Tell them you want information on it, and either bring it inside in a locked case, or ask the officer to come out and carry it in with you or for you, whichever he prefers.

I made the mistake of carrying a flare pistol into a police dept. once to get a permit for it. I made the whole place very nervous when I reached into my jacket to get it.

Make sure that you keep an accurate record of the date of purchase and from whom it was purchased. It would be a good idea for you to insist on having the drivers license number of the person to whom you purchased the weapon.

There are gun transfer rules in each state identifying what the state feels is required for transferring ownership.

Most who believe in the second amendment rights disagree with the present ownership transfer procedures.

You do however want to keep accurate records from a personal standpoint to protect yourself should it later be found that the weapon had been used crime.

This guy is buying guns from people on the street with scratched out serial numbers. I would have it finger printed by the police. Make you you are aiming it at them when you ask though. It will really get their attention and make you their priority.
