They called my house and asked for a donation and I handed my credit card number and stuff. But I was wondering why do cops ask for donations are they not sponsored by state government?

The cops don't call for fundraisers.
Many 'organizations' call for donations and have nothing to do with law enforcement.
I personally was called by a group identifying themselves as 'Texas State Troopers Association' for a donation. I asked a lot of questions and they couldn't answer me.
I went online and found out that during a one year period, they raised over $3.7 Million from Texas.... and the ONLY monies they ever gave to any trooper was $10,000 for an injured officer.... EVER.
Be wary of anyone who calls for fundraisers and if you have a question, call the police agency involved.

They do this to collect money. The feel they are over worked & under paid. I'm not a fan of cops so I don't contribute. |

I NEVER contribute to unsolicited requests for donations to any organization especially those received over the phone. How do you know that it was legit? Almost all are not legit. The police don't do phone solicitations. If they need donations, they will host an event for people to attend.
Watch your bank statements and account balances. You probably got scammed. Do a Google search for police (or fire) phone solicitations. |

You were not contacted by the actual cops. You were contacted by the "Fraternal Order of Police" They are not affiliated directly with cops. They collect money every year for whatever their cause is....they say it's buying proper gear and so on......and you get a little bumper sticker you can put on your car. Secret.....if you get pulled over by the cops and have one of those little stickers saying you "supported the Police Department" they will almost always go easy on you. They will let you go with a warning most of the time.
