Although the item was only $60 you cost them a great deal of money for security.
Target has the right to be reimbursed for the cost of its security to catch shoplifters.
Making shoplifters contribute to the cost of the security people is a good idea.
You should have thought of that before you shoplifted the item in the first place.
Actually $354 is low.
You should have to pay Target at least $2,000 to $3,000. Even that amount would not be enough to cover their security costs. |

stop stealing stuff would be a good starting point... |

What are you talking about.
You are telling em they sent you a BILL, for something you stole.
Why did you not ust give it back.
Anyway. Ok, I would call an attorney.
Also, I would see if they will settle for payment in full of maybe 80 dollars.
I am willing to bet that they will accept a smaller sum.
Just make sure that you get proof that it is settled in full and as agreed. |

You should pay it. Just be glad they're not pressing for a criminal record. You did this to yourself by choosing to break the law. |

the nearly 300 excess you ahve to pay is probably in fines, just do what they ask you because you are on the wrong side of this, if they press charges your *** is grass |

I won't lecture you about shoplifting, because I'm sure you know what I would say.
The arrangement you offered was not acceptable, why should they have to wait 17+ months to get their money? Borrow the money and pay them. They could have you arrested. |

I would consult an attorney. |

You could probably pay it off by spending time in jail if that works better for you. Didn't your parents ever tell you that it's wrong to steal. |

Depends on your age. If you are under 18 you should go talk to social services. They can set up a payment plan. Over the age of 18 you just need to pay it. They are charging yo so much because you have to pay the theft fee. It sux but that is actually a small theft fee. I stole something that was 30 bucks and I ended up haveing to pay over 500 bucks. |

You should figure out a way to pay more then $20 a month. At $20 a month it would take you almost 18 months to pay off 354 bucks.....I wouldnt have accepted that either.
Get a job and stop stealing!! |

Another arrangement would be that you go to jail for breaking the law. Does that sound better? |

well I'd say go into the storeand talk to the manager or their loss prevention worker. I'm sure they could figure something out as a face to face is always better. But make sure you are not court ordered to stay away first. |

Well, you should have paid for the item to begin with. |

well even though the item was only $60 they probabally are taxing you an extra $294 for stealing. I would probablly talk to a lawyer. I would call them first to make sure they do know the item was only $60, but then contact your lawyer. But you are lucky they are not prosacuting you. |

UM, pay SHOP LIFTING IS A CRIME!!!! you have to pay, if ya cant pay the time, dont do the crime |

You have a few options, but none of them are really great.
1.) Pay the entire fine and don't get a criminal record.
2.) Consult an attorney and most likely pay more in legal fees.
3.) Say "screw you, target guy" and have them press charges and give you a criminal record that haunts you for a long *** time.
Now I suggest option 1. Put the fine on a credit card and pay that off, or fudge getting a loan or get a payday forward, just don't get a criminal record.
And oh yeah, don't steal **** either! |

Alright... Just to start with a retorical question... How did u get caught? The 286$ is restocking fees, inspection fee/security fees (comissions) and various taxes. Question I am curious the answer to is did they recover the merchandice? Do you still have it? Or is it something unreturnable? If returnable and you still have possession of it work a deal to cut it down to just the various fees. Than work payments. Most likely for an amount under 500 they will probably want it paid within 3 to 6 payments. |

you should just pay , if you get charged you will be looking at some time in jail and criminal recerd . |

#1 - don't ever shoplift, and #2, don't ever shoplift from Target!!! They have a security department that will take you to the mat and you will lose. I believe you are going to end up paying 354. They are probably factoring in security and legal expenses, which probably were at least that amount. Make the appointment and face the consequences. Ask them what your options are. They will probably tell you you are never allowed in Target again. Target does not mess around. PS 354 is a small price for a serious crime! |

They are charging you for the item you stole, and you obviously weren't very good at stealing, because you go caught, and for the cost of catching you and, ultimately, prosecuting you. My advice, PAY THE MONEY, otherwise, get used to being in JAIL, where you would be if it was up to me-YOU ARE A THIEF, they are offering you an easy way out, but, hey don't pay it, and wind up in jail, it is what you deserve! |

The first $60 is for the stolen item. The remainder is what's called an expensive lesson.
LEARN FROM IT! |

You have received a civil demand letter. You are being asked to pay for the item you stole / attempted to steal and attorney fees. This is their way to try and resolve this matter without taking you to Court.
Your offer to pay $20.00 a month is just too little, as it would take nearly two years to complete. You need to offer something more, such as a payment schedule that will have it paid off in six months.
If you don't pay, the next step for them would be to take you to Court and sue you. If you ignore them and they do sue you, you can pretty much double what you owe them now as they will tack on Court fees and attorney fees to the amount you already owe.
Expensive lesson! |

I would pay it, if you do not they can file(or re-file) criminal charges and then you would be look at a few month to a year in jail (or juvi if you are a minor). |
