I got a perfect criminal record, but lost my job, can bankruptcy disqualify you from being a police officer?

YES it can and WILL , for all of you that answer this question no , you clearly have no clue what you are talking about , bad credit and a bankruptcy are looked at as a indication of a applicants responsibility , and i 100 % guarantee you in a larger department or a federal law enforcement career a chapter 7 will disqualify you

Yes, any credit problems can prevent you from being a police officer. Police officers with money problems are more apt to take bribes or become corrupt or be influenced by the people to whom they owe money. A credit check is a part of an application to become a policeman.

If you have repaired your credit standing, it won't affect you. However, the police department has to be sure that you won't be susceptible to being bribed. If you are in bad financial standing, that could affect your chances. The only way to find out is to go for the job since different PDs have different rules.

I sure hope you meant that you have no criminal record because the police don't usually hire criminals....even perfect ones.

Bankruptcy itself won't disqualify you from joining the police department but they will want to know the reasons for your insolvency. If it came about because of a gambling or substance abuse problem then it will work against you. If its due to mismanagement of personal finances then they will need assurances that the problem has been resolved.

Some larger police agencies are sticklers when it comes to credit issues. (Phoenix PD for sure just as an example)

When I first applied at the agency I work for, I was sweating bullets because my credit history is less than perfect. I'd say you have a better chance getting on with a smaller agency that really needs officers. Larger agencies have tougher rules and regulations. You can always try though.

Showing them that you've been responsible in managing your money since the bankruptcy definitely would help you!

ETA: Police are picky because of the access to confidential information you'd have as a Cop. They want to make sure you wouldn't be susceptible to bribing, blackmail, etc.

They will pull your credit and see that you have had a bankruptcy in your past and may use it as a reference to your character and reliability but in no way can they base the whole of it on your bankruptcy.

Possibly, a lot of jobs these days are doing back ground checks, including credit checks. You may be able to be a police officer but not be able to get a job waiting tables at a nice restaurant.

Bankruptcy won't even disqualify you from the FBI. (In most cases)
BUT! Just remember...if it's between you and another candidate who doesn't have a bankruptcy on their record...guess who they would choose?

In an internal background investigation in any company or corporation you apply to, they will check your credit report. This helps them analyze whether you are going to be an asset or a liability. If you have filed for bankruptcy or have great financial debt, they will take it into account and your risk factor as a potential employee will increase. Why? Especially if you are in great financial debt, your risk factor along with a personality assessment may determine if you will steal from or embark the company, or in this case the force in a journey of law suit. You might not have stolen a penny in the past, but that is not what employers will see. In the end, they want to protect themselves.

When you are denied employment, they will often times do it in a discrete manner. If you request a specific reason, they can give you a run around. They just might see you as a risk.

disqualify you, yes i think so because they do look at your credit report the things that can disqualify you from becoming a police officer at least for the sheriffs department is 1. credit 2. domestic violence and i cant really remember the third one... but yes they do a very thorough background check that includes credit, past employment they require letters from your past empoyers, they talk to your neighbors and more. you should contact a recruiter for whatever agency you want to apply to and speak to them... good luck
