Find answers to your legal question.

I got a speeding ticket in Massachusetts but have a CT license.?

The Officer said I was going 91 in a 65. I honestly think I wasnt going that fast and it was at midnight with no lights on the road, how does he know it was my car? At any rate, will Connecticut find out about this ticket? Should I just pay the fine or fight it? Will there be an effect on my insurance rate?

Whatever you do, don't ignore it. Every state has a compact with the other on tickets. Neighboring states are especially diligent about reporting suspensions. They'll probably suspend the CT license if you don't pay or show up for court.

When your policy is up for renewal, your insurance company does a nationwide search for convictions based on your drivers license. They'll rate based on that. Doesn't matter what state it occurred in.

Lots of states have a first time offender or traffic school program but Unfortunately, Massachusetts doesn't allow drivers to have tickets dismissed just because they've enrolled in a traffic school. Looks like your ticket will cost at least $310. Ouch.

I'd say go to court if you can throw yourself on the mercy of the court. Find out what evidence the cop has. Probably laser. Unless you have a strong legal defense, you may be better off admitting and asking for leniency.

They sent the bill to me in Canada, so you don't stand a chance I would guess (no I didn't pay it, sorry )

Connecticut will find out about it. either pay the ticket or show up and maybe get the fine reduced. your insurance may or may not go up depending how the insurance company does its research

If you think the officer is wrong, request a hearing. If you are found not guilty of the offense, you don't have anything to worry about. If you plead guilty or are found guilty, it will go on your driving record regardless of which state you're licensed in.

I can tell you why the lights are shut off. The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has shut off all the lights to save money. Yep, they're still paying for the Big Dig. They've also cut overtime for toll takers on holiday weekends, meaning very long lines at the tolls.

And dude, if you're going fast enough to get a ticket in Massachusetts, of all places, you need to slow down.

Driving records have nothing to do with the state you live in. It is a national system. Anywhere you get pulled over the ticket will show up on a police computer screen. So yes CT will find out about the ticket if you get pulled over there.

If you fight the fine you have to appear at a court in the town in MA where you got the ticket. You mail it back and check off where it says you want a court date. You can say that "you were going with the flow of traffic". Most likely it will NOT be thrown out in court BUT it will be reduced (the amount of the fine). You get a randomly assigned court date so it means you will lose a day of work. It is usually cheaper for many people to pay the whole fine how it is and not fight it, cause in this case you won't win.

Also yes it will effect your insurance rate. It will go up when you renew. Also if you get 3 tickets (or written warnings or combo) in 1 year you lose your license for a set amount of days. So make sure you dont get another ticket this year! SLOW DOWN.

Heh, heh....as a Connecticut cop let me tell you how this works fellow Nutmegger.

Connecticut is a member (along with MA and several other states) of the No Compact Law. What this means is that if you fail to pay the ticket you received up there, they contact the DMV here and your license and registration are suspended.

Easier to pay the ticket then have to stand in line at Connecticut DMV and fill out all those forms, only to be send away no less than 4 times because the paperwork isn't in order. I think you're better off dealing with the fine then meeting up with DMV clerks.

Your best bet is to contact the courts and ask them these questions. They are the ones who will process your ticket and will know all the laws and regulation. You should also ask the courts if you are allowed to take a driving school class. This will prevent your insurance from going up and points from being placed on your license. Just make sure you get the courts permission before doing so. If you don’t the courts will reject your driving school certificate. Good luck!

Might as well pay it. If not, you WILL loose your license. All states work together and sooner or later a police man will visit you.
