I have a police record from 2 years ago?

It is for something pretty minor (i got aressted though) anyway they said it would be erased by the time I am 18 and now I am 18 and I am trying to be a working member of society can I trust the police got rid of that file?

The idiots telling you your record is sealed at 18 ARE GUESSING. This is absolutely NOT TRUE. The only way to get it sealed is through a laywer and this must be done before you turn 18. I assure you, it's still visible on your record for the world to see - ask many people the other people here who are trying to get good jobs with crimes before they were 18 still showing up on their background searches.

Remember, most people in this group are guessing and guessing poorly. Your crimes committed before you turned 18 are still visible and will be for the rest of your life. Thats' why it's called a "record."

It's not erased but it is sealed. the courts can view this if you ever got into any trouble but an employer cannot. Good luck and stay out of trouble!

All crimes committed as a juvenile are permanently sealed upon reaching age 18 - you are starting out afresh, don't screw up this time because then the file WILL be permanent !!

Arrest records and records of court convictions are 2 totally different things. Being arrested is not really a big deal. It is the going to court part that is. The disposition of the cases is generally what causes problems. misdemeanors do not usually affect your employment chances unless you are going fo certain jobs and what the misdemeanors were. Felonies are a whole different ballgame. Most job and rental applications will ask if you have been convicted of a felony within the last 5 years. Not knowing where you are from, I can not say for certain. But as far as I know every state has juvenile records sealed (violent crimes being an exception). The federal government is the only orginization outside of the court system I have heard of gaining access to those records. In those cases it was military recruiters and the person had to give permission to access the records.

if it was pretty "minor" you wouldn't have been arrested. nothing is ever "erased" and police do not "get rid of" files... just because a crime was committed when you were underage doesn't mean that it is expunged, just that the file is sealed.

In this case is best for you to handle the situation yourself contact the proper authorities and have the matter handled. No you can not trust the police to pull up files from 2 yrs ago and clean up your record. This is something you have to make sure of yourself.

Erik
your records are sealed. they will not even release it to you. however if you go for a job with a TOP SECRET security clearance. You will have to mention it, because the FBI can search those files.

Yeah they are not 100% expunged, and can come back to haunt you as far as other legal matters are concerned, but when an employer does a background check on you it won't come up. It is in a sealed juvenile record.
