immeadiately and remain seated. Is this factual or just and exaggeration? This is a serious question not a joke.

no but stay in your seat. dont exit the vehicle or hide your hands. cops are trained to look at ppl's hands so dont make any furtive movements |

Not unless you are instructed to do so..... The people that you "hear" this stuff from deal drugs, or are gang members? Those are the ones that usually complain the loudest about cops and such. |

you should always keep ur hands where they can see them .. on the wheel is ok ... i got yanked out my window one time and a gun put to my forehead for digging around looking for my liscense when a cop walked up .... i guess the mac10 on the floorboard in the back didnt help the situation any tho .. |

you should put them on the driving wheel to not make the police officer nervous (he might think you have a gun or something and you're pulling it out). |

The suggestion in California is that the driver should put both hands on the steering wheel near the top of the wheel, something like 30 or 45 degrees apart. Then do whatever the officer requests.
However, this seems to vary from place to place, and officer to officer.
One thing is constant - never drop hands out of the officers sight or you risk being shot.

A REAL good idea, especially in the area of Portland Oregon. An average of one UNARMED suspect a week is gunned down (killed, executed) there for failing to follow instructions, and to date, NO officers have ever been indicted by a grand jury for ANY wrongdoing… |

No, you keep your hands on the wheel where they can be seen and wait for the officer to come to the driver's side door. |

Its a joke. |

Maybe it is better to err on the side of caution in those states where the police are trigger happy & put your hands up. |

Interesting. As long as I have been practising criminal defense, and all of these hands rules are new to me. |

in all states, you should always remain in your seat, and keep your hands on the steering wheel where they can see them.
If they want you do do anything else they will tell you |

In almost all states, the police want your hands where they can see them.Biggest mistake you can make is reaching under the seat or for the glove box.Who can blame them?People continually denegrate police officers, but how would anyone like the feeling of not knowing if thats going to be the last person you pull over. Thanks officers for what you do and God Bless you all. |

Just keep your hands on the wheel and spread out your fingers.
Bad guys have been known to conceal weapons in the headliners of their vehicles, so hands raised all the way up would make me suspicious.
Have your window rolled down and wait until the officer gets to your window before you reach for your wallet, purse or try to get anything out of the glove compartment.
If you do have to reach for something, tell the officer what you are doing, "I have to get my registration out of the glove compartment." "My wallet is under my seat." etc.
And this is a good idea in any state. Traffic stops are the second most deadly activity for a police officer, the first being domestic violence; so it is understandable that they would be a bit wary. |

this is an exaggeration the best thing to do is just keep your hands high one the steering wheel and not look all over the place like you are nervous. Just sit calmly it will keep the officer calm. and keeping your hand on the wheel lets the officer see that you are not reaching all over the place. |

This is nonsense... |

In California, it is a good idea to take out your wallet as you park, then keep both hands in plain view on the steering wheel. The exception is Humboldt County "behind the redwood curtain" where they will shoot you anyhow if they don't like your looks or your bumper-sticker.
Turn your engine off.
In Texas, you areSOL if you're the wrong type. |
