I just arrested a 8 year old.?

So I get a call about vandalism…and I get on seen and see this older lady and a little kid. So I thought that the person who committed the crime left. So I get out of my patrol car and walk up to the lady asking who called us. She responded with “I did sir.” I said okay what’s the problem? She then tells me how the 8 year old juvenile was throwing rocks and sticks at her car. She told me that she wanted to press charges agents the juvenile. I told her let me get the other side from the juvenile. I went and talked with him and he admitted to doing it. I then radioed dispatch and told them that I was arresting a 8 year old for vandalism. I placed the juvenile under arrest and got a statement from the lady, and took the juvenile to the detention center. Should I feel as bad as I do?

For the people thinking about the post I made saying I was 16. That was for my son. And for the people saying I cant spell, you never made a type-O? As far as the cant talk about the arrest goes- i never said names you dont know who I am or were I patrol.

I see what you mean, you have a citizen that wants to press charges but maybe the best way to handle it is get the parents involved. Maybe getting the parents in front of the complainant with the kid would of softened the complainant into not pressing charges and maybe some community service at the complainants house for punishment. I guess my question to you is, what would happen to you if you did not take the kid to jail and disregarded the complainant and just brought the kid to the parents and the complainant called the department? I would love to be a police officer but I can`t bust people for laws I don`t believe in like pot, so I would get stopped in the interview when they ask if I think pot is bad. Yes, it kills motivation and people should not drive on it but I would not be able to bust someone that I know will loose their lob, scholarship etc. I know it is not my fault they broke the law but sometimes the outcome is worse. Anyway you took a oath to enforce the laws and you are just doing your job it is not your fault.

Before you claim to be a police officer, maybe you should leave your profile questions you have asked private. In one of your questions you stated you were 16. I figured from your story that you were full of it.

seeing as you cant spell for one and two officers arent allowed to discuss or post arrests your not a cop

most states wont allow a child this young to be arrested also you just take the child home to the parents

Well, officer, I imagine that you were following policy in arresting him. In the old days when I was a kid, back in the fiftys, if I had been caught doing something like that, I would have been taken home, and my dad would have spanked the tar out of me. But, things have changed, and not nec. for the better... Wouldn't you agree on that at least in this case ?

Maybe he will learn the hard way that Crime doesn't pay!

community service for him and maybe something for his parents...depending on how the handel it...like some kinda at my school smoke...one kids mom found out and grounded him no friends..he still had x box...and she sed no point of telling ur dad he wont care

You were doing you job - there are programs out there for juveniles. Arresting him, even though I agree is not the thing to do, will teach him a lesson.

Normal children have parents you can talk to, but this does not sound like a normal situation.

What do you do? You can't let him run around like a wild child and destroy cars. The person who will have a headache is the judge who has to decide what to do with him.

Odds are he'll become a ward of the state and grow up in an orphanage. A rough life, but if you'd left him running wild would his life have been any better? A Hobson's choice, but at first glance it appears you chose the right one.
