I just got a speeding ticket for allegedly going 40 mph over the speed limit in Georgia?

I was clocked going 95 in a 55 mph zone in Georgia. Yes, that is really fast, but I would like to know what my options are.

I was not arrested at the time, however I'm worried about possibly having my license revoked or suspended and being dropped from my insurance policy.

This is my first speeding ticket, but I have a previous ticket for "following to closely" which I pleaded Nolo too.

Do I need to hire a lawyer?

P.S. Yes, I'm an idiot, you don't need to tell me. I'm also 21.( no I wasn't drunk)

*Eddy J- I said "allegedly" because I cannot be certain. I was not looking down at my speedometer at the time.

I know that I was speeding, however I'm not sure if I was going 95 mph.

One of the penalties for a speeding ticket is that you will be ordered to pay fines. The fines may range from $140 to $330, depending on the severity of your offense.

Another penalty is that points will be added to your driver’s license. The more points on your license, the greater the consequences. For example, after you have accumulated 15 points within 24 months, the Georgia Department of Driver Services may suspend your driver’s license, even if some of the violations occurred out of state.

In Georgia, speeding 34 mph or over above the speed limit adds 6 points to your driver license.

Each state is different. Let me suggest to you that it wouldn't hurt to consult a lawyer by phone and lay out the whole story so they can advise you.

An attorney may be able to get you into Drivers Training course, then the charge is dropped.

Allegedly? C'mon man, either you were or you weren't You know for sure. Allegedly is for the courts. This is not a court of law. Were you or were you not.

If you can afford it hire a lawyer. If they can get the case dismissed, then at least they might be able to get the fine reduced by plea bargaining.

If you're not even sure what speed you were doing, then the judge will have no choice but to accept the cop's testimony. I drive a high-performance sports car myself, so I can understand if you couldn't feel the speed and went over the limit (especially if you were new to the car and not familiar with it's handling), but that won't be accepted in court as an excuse.
