This is a serious question.
My girlfriend was raped when she was 17, shes 19 now and just told me about it so im a little conserned about her.

I think you would understand if it happened to someone you loved.

I once used a metal-cased propelling pencil to extract myself from a rather bad situation. When taken to court for GBH, the fact that I used an inoffensive item to defend myself helped my case.

Perfume and pencils are often found in handbags, although I would never advocate using such items as a weapon or carrying them with the possible intent of using them as weapons.

A woman on her own at night is a target for all weirdos. Take whatever precautions you can come up with. A personal alarm is a start. It makes lots of noise and this should alert people nearby who may [just may] assist.

Not sure about pepper spray but any old pepper thrown into the face of an assailant is gonna work.

Any woman who is being attacked by a man should thrust her knee hard as possible up between the mans legs into where it hurts most. She must also scratch his face as hard as possible - kick bite etc.

Stay safe - never go alone, always with friends. Keep in well lit and populated areas. If in doubt take a cab.

I am a pensioner and when I was attacked recently, I thrust my lighted cigarette into the man's nose. He never asked for more and probably now has a burn hole in his nose. See if I care.

Always be on your guard and do not be afraid to really hurt any attacker.

making up your own pepper spray is possible however I dont advise it for two reasons. Firstly, your girlfriend can get 10 years inside for carrying it as its classed as a firearm under section 10 of the 1968 firearms act, secondly as a pepper spray only has one definable use if she used it or was caught carrying it, its obvious and unarguable that she was carrying it as a weapon. Go with the following alternatives instead, theyre all reasonably common items in a ladys handbag:-

Insect repellent spray - Try the lifesystems 100% DEET solution in a pump-spray bottle available in any branch of millets or blacks at around £5.99 for a 50ml bottle. This has a similar effect to CS gas if you get a little drop in your eyes by accident, so id hate to have it sprayed in my face deliberately!!!

Perfume spray - a little compact perfume pump bottle will temporarily disable an attacker giving vital seconds to flee. The higher the alcohol content the better

Breath freshener spray - again, the higher the alcohol content the better!!

Deodorant / hairspray - ive used a deodorant can against an attacker once with impressive results. It actually made his eyes bleed.

Rat-tail comb - can be used to jab at the eyes of an attacker or if grabbed by the attacker, your girlfriend can use the rat-tail to jab at the hand holding her.

Mini-maglite - if clutched and jabbed into the temples or eyes surprisingly effective

I dont recommend oven cleaner as mentioned above, firstly, this would come across as an offensive weapon (hows she going to be oven cleaning when shes out at night) and secondly if she were to blind an attacker she could be prosecuted, because thats the way our liberal government works im afraid!!

Im sorry to hear whats happened to her, one of my ex girlfriends had a similar experience and I was ready for murder. Hopefully she can overcome this

Best wishes

Find a shampoo bottle with a flip top and see if it can shoot watter by squeezing it, Then load it with a 3 to 1 mix of strong mouthwash and water. Cinnamon mouthwash worked great for me.

The nice thing about it is that it wont contaminate her flat or a hallway also blinding her. and a misfire smells nice.

The stuff stings the eyes like mad and the smell will also repel dogs and cats.

get her a personal alarm, they are really loud, i would just meet her late at night, never let her go on her own, i know what she has gone through, make sure she always Carry's perfume in her bag, then she can just use that in someone eyes, stay safe, all the best

Send her to self-defense classes, or start her in a martial art. It's a better solution in the long term. Also, go to class with her - then it'll be a thing you do together, which is good for the relationship.

Good luck!

Don't think of a d.i.y pepper spray, that can only have one use and is an offensive weapon.

There are many things a girl can carry in her bag quite reasonably, like as has already been said, hairspray, deodorant etc, all of which will sting the eyes very effectively. Then there are keys, pens, combs etc. A comb raked down the face will seriously hurt! So does a knee in the nadgers, or a punch on the nose.

In other words, there are many means of taking care of yourself without stooping to dangerous weapons.

Good for you, thinking of your girlfriend's safety. Why not sit down with her and go through what she normally carries and discuss what use each item would be in extremis. I think you'll be surprised.

A self-defence colleague of mine used to say "There's nothing better than a kick in the crotch, followed by a knee in the nose when he curls up in agony, to disable someone!"

A Pepper pot , with the lid off is still?"only a Pepper Pot!
My mom in law always, carries a Poker(as in the fire side).
It is still !only a Fireside Poker?
She carries it,up her sleeve.
and woe betide, the person she encounters/she only "hit" them with her sleeve/"to fend off her attacker".

clem kiddlehopper
Tell her to look up schools that instruct in Judo. Once you learn this fine art of self-defence, your confidence will be flying high, and when it comes to doing the attacker in, you will be able to react. Repitition is the key to being successful in any move to stop aggressions upon you.

Travel hairspray is badass stuff.

This will sound rather lame after reading some of the other answers but really self defence classes would be the best option.A good place to ask is your local police station the community officer will advise. It would give your girlfriend more confidence, the consequences of arming yourself could go horribly wrong, the attacked could use her weapon against her or she could really damage the lowlife and end up in more trouble, even prison, I know it is so unfair that the crims seem to have more rights than the victim, you cant even defend yourself if someone breaks into your house, it makes my blood boil.

Use a 10% or even 20% solution of (Oleoresin Capsicum) Just find a bottle to spray in a hard pressure. I think it is pretty ridiculous that England does not allow pepper spray. Yea, it is possible to make it yourself. Use chili pepperss, and water. The water will not wash the active ingredient away. I have not tried this before so you might need try small tests on your skin and see if it causes irritation.

Pepper spray is illegal in the UK as it is dangerous. You have to be trained to use it, as if you use it incorrectly, you will feel more of the effects than the person attacking you and this will render you more vulnerable than you were before.

The ideal way to deal with concerns for safety is through planning. My girlfriend has the same concerns, so I always ensure that I meet her wherever she is, or if this is not possible, I know that she will not be walking alone.

I understand your concerns, but arming her with a weapon is not the answer, and makes the situation ten times worse.

Now you know why violent crime is such a problem in the U.K.

Their Socialistic Society is scared to death of people who wish to protect themselves.

The short term solution= oven cleaner. Spray it into an attackers eyes- he'll need fresh water in 5 minutes or be blind.

If you really want chilli spray- find the hottest chillies available.
Blend them into a pure.
Boil gently in salted water. Touch tiny fork amount onto tongue, then on inner arm. Keep adding hundreds of chillies until chilli mixture burns inner arm because of acidity- not temperature.
Strain through a cloth.
Basically the pepper spray is the derivative of the Capsic acids. If you can buy that acid in pure form- that's the spray's constituent.

Don't ask how I know- I''ll get me account deleted.

Martial arts- gyu ryu, systema, pencak silat, aikido. All use joint locking and will disable any opponent regardless of weight and size and even kill them if necessary. Former Pencak Silat instructor (Bela diri)..

Long term- vote for a political party willing to force law and order back onto a limp society. Vote BNP. I will be proudly.

Oh dear! There are some very amusing answers by some very misguided people on here!

Making a pepper spray would constitute and offence under the firearms act. Put simply, anything that propels a noxious substance is classed as a fire arm.

Arming yourself with something like a perfume or hairspray would constitute an offence of carrying an offensive weapon. Put simply, an offensive weapon is anything that's made, intended or adapted to cause harm.

Arm her with any of the above and she's liable to prosecution if they are found in her possession.

The best thing you can arm her with is common sense, an understanding of UK law, awareness of her surroundings and some simple self defence skills.

Good luck

You should give her a muscle-bound ripped body guard to take her out on those midnight strolls. She will feel safe nestled in his chest. Or you could buy her a big bad dog(Rottweiler or Pitbull) that would make her feel safe, too. Maybe a rocket launcher or machine gun.
