If your small you may think of getting a .32 or .380 pistols both are medium strength and medium accuracy, but if it's concealed then you looking at point blank shots. If you have a little bit more desire to stop them go with a small .38 revolver or 9mm subcompact. I carry a .38 and I'm a big guy. 6 ft 250lbs. The .38 offers more stopping power AND the reduced possibility of a ricochet! Reduces collateral damage or accidental deaths. Plus they offer a wide range of specialty ammo that the .32's and .380's don't

Go to a gun dealer, tell them what you want and then try a few guns. many gun shops also have indor ranges where you can try certain weapons.
I don't reccomend a stun gun. I would reccomend pepper spray. The reason is this. With a stun gun the pain is only localized to where the prongs make contact. The other areas where it does not make contact can still move. Like an arm hand etc. When contact is lost there is no pain. Pepper spray allows you to hit your target from a few feet a away and will cause them pain and discomfort plenty log enough to escape. There are a few people who do not get affected by pepper spary.
To get a stun gun that is worth the time it would have to be a Taser Civilian Model. They are not cheap, around $600. This Taser uses about 20 jouels and 15 pulses per seconf. This should do the trick. Police isues Tasers use 105 jouels and 19 pulses per second. I have been shot with this and it hurt so damn bad I would do almost anything to never have it happen again. The only thing is with a Tasre you need to be aggressive. If one prong does not hit, you miss or their clothing is too thick you have to follow up with a drive stun
Guns are reliable, but unless you think your life is in danger, Pepper spray is cheap, and works almost all of the time. I have been sprayed with this nasty crap a few times, and I can tell you Iam not one of the people who can eailsy fight through it. It took me abouty forty five minutes to even egt my eyes to stay open without me holding them.
But all in all guns are relaible

Do not get a 22. It would never have the power to stop a man coming after you. A 45 or a 10mm are to big for you. You should have a 9mm or a 38.

My suggestion would be a Kahr MK9. It is a compact semi automatic 9mm. Just right for concealment with stopping power if needed. I have looked into buying one for myself for off duty carry, but I chose to go with a higher caliber gun in the end. I'm still thinking of getting one as a backup though.

I have considered this myself, also a tiny female, and I have a pal that is a police chief, and yet still I have no gun.

A gun, if you are not trained and prepared to use it on the spot and shoot to kill, is more likely going to put you MORE at risk.

Look more to tech to keep you safe, alarm systems and lights and cams.

Consider a stun gun.

With any advantage I could kick someones butt when they threaten me or my family, this is not the same as I can make the kill shot. And I understand that any hesitation to do this could cost me, and my family our lives.

Its a huge choice.

You want a firearm that you can handle easily and one that won't have too much recoil. I would suggest a .25 caliber semi automatic. They fit nicely just about anywhere. At close range the stopping power is there and the model is very reliable.

A .32 is a good woman's gun. Just make sure of 2 vitally important things.That you learn gun safety by knowing that gun intimately. This means about 1000 rounds at the range. And if you take that gun out be prepared to use it without hesitation. If you are not ready to kill someone , when your gun is drawn you are fair game to the bad guy who may have a gun you do not know about

A .22 magnum would be sufficient to stop most attackers. Learn some defensive tactics though, or else you're gun might become a liability. Shop arround for the gun that best suits your needs for concealibility and weight. Some gun stores allow you to test fire a few rounds before purchasing a weapon if they have a firing range.

Find a firearm that fits your needs. Go to the local firing range and ask if you could try different models and styles.

Where are you going to use this firearm?

If it is just for home protection, I would reccomend a pump action shotgun. The sound made chambering the shell is universally understood and can put fear into the intruders.

If you are going to carry it with you at all times, go with something smaller. Find a pistol or revolver with enough stopping power to be taken seriously, yet small enough to be handled easily by you.

Well, if you're going to get a gun just for cause....Like target practise....I'd definitely get a small .22 calibre....
These are great to mess around with...You could even purchase a .22 rifle as they hold a lot of ammo and a especially fun when targeting beer cans and such...
But.................If it's for protection...And you say you're small. But I'd bet you could handle yourself well. I'd get me a nice 357 magnum. You bet. Not only will it blow your target's *ss off...It's a nice looking gun and it'll feel real good in your hand. It's a classic for sure...and deserves respect.

You really shouldn't need anything more than a .22 or .25 caliber as they handle easily and will cause an attacker to think once or twice if you should shoot him or her. There is very little recoil and the power is there too. Maybe think about a small semi-automatic.
