I quit a job--turned in the key 3 days after I quit--but now they say the cops will come?
|
I quit a nannying job very unexpected. The job just was too much to handle (44 hours a week and attending college full time can take a toll on a person!). Needless to say, it didn't end well. I quit Monday--and said I'd mail the key as soon as I could. I had a lot to do this week with finals approaching and never had the chance to get to the post office. Yesterday was my free day and I mailed it certified. This morning I wake up to a text message from an unknown number telling me "We better have the key today or the cops are coming". I told her that I sent it yesterday and it is certified... She told me I was lying and that it should have arrived today. I told her that it'll be there Monday at the latest. The person claims to be the grandmother of the family (though I had the grandmothers cell phone number and it is not hers). I know they want their key and don't want anyone to have it--but can they really threaten me? I truly do understand their position but they have just treated me nasty. I have asked them all to stop harassing me--but they wouldn't. Finally put a block on all their numbers today. I know they want their key (I would too!) but is it fair for them to harass, threaten, and call me a liar? This is ridiculous. My dad said to tell them to call the police and if they don't I will because I am tired of being harassed...but that's just not the type of person I am. Suggestions? Additional Details Thanks guys! I just wanted to calm my nerves. It has been a stressful day--and sometimes you just have to hear from somebody else that its not anything to worry about!

Don't worry about it, you already mailed it to them. Remember that going to court costs a lot of money. Even if that family never gets its keys back, it would be cheaper for them to change the locks on their door than to hire a lawyer and go through the court system. |

If they call the police, you won't be sent to jail, you'll just have to spend some time telling them what you just told us, then they'll probably leave and tell the other family to wait a week. There's nothing to really worry about. Also, if you tell them that they won't leave you alone, they'll probably tell the other family to stop calling or ask you to file a restraining order against them. |

Well think of it this way. 1. where is the proof you didn't give it back. 2. They can't arrest you for you not having their key, they can sue you. 3. If they sue you, just counter sue them. 4. Keep their numbers blocked and don't worry about it. |

Don't worry about it, cops will probably just tell you they are crazy. |

First, you should have returned the keys to then personally, school schedule or not. Secondly, the cop thing is an empty threat. You have not committed a crime. The keys were given to you as part of your job, you did not steal them. Hold on to your proof of mailing them. Thirdly, if the harassment continues, report them to the police. They are probably angry because you left so suddenly, but that is not excuse to torture you like this. Good luck. |

do you have a copy of your receipt when you mailed it. that can be is your proof you mailed it. they will get their key monday and hopefully they will leave you alone then |

The police would be pretty upset with these people if they did get called. There's nothing for them to do but wait for their key. Unless they have a robbery at their house; in which case the police would likely call you in for questioning. If you have a receipt for mailing the key, all the better. These people are probably very upset that you left them hanging as far as childcare or whatever, but they should not be harassing you like that. If they are that worried about you having a key, they should change their locks! They do not have any reason to be calling the police, as no laws have been broken. If they continue to harass you, YOU can call the police on THEM! |

You could always show them a copy of your certified ticket and receipt from the post office. That would show your not trying to lie or blow them off. Two wrongs don't make a right (old saying) so don't be nasty back even if they started it. Stay calm, be nice and resolve this as an adult not crap like they're being. Your better than that but if all else fails call the police yourself for harassment and show the certified postal receipt to show your intentions and honesty. Good Luck!!! |

At the most, this would be a civil matter. The police would tell them to change the locks and continue on their way.
You have no worries............ |

If the family reports this matter to the police, the cops will probably have to at least check it out (it depends on the law in your municipality).
So expect a possible visit from some officers: tell the story as you've told it here, and show them the receipt for the certified letter if you still have it (you might even want to give them a photocopy of the receipt for their report --- just ALWAYS keep the original! !!!). You know this is gratuitous harassment, and the police'll know it, too, because they deal with pathetically noxious complaints like this all the time.
Now. *Why,* exactly, can't you tell these people to call the police if they feel they must? Is *not* telling them so going to somehow stop them from making a complaint against you? Your Dad suggested the only practical course you have.
You write, "My dad said to tell them to call the police and if they don't I will because I am tired of being harassed...but that's just not the type of person I am."
So what kind of person *are* you? Spineless? Or right? Wouldn't it be better to be straightforward, practical and dignified?
Don't make the self-destructive mistake of thinking that being blunt or decisive is the same thing as being rude and nasty! If you're afraid to be straightforward or blunt with people, then you are just a doormat waiting to wipe the worst off people's feet. You have a backbone -- use it!
You did well to block their phone calls. And your Dad is right. |
|

Is he really that darn STUPID
 |
Sorry I agree with your Dad on this one, It may be hard, But you shouldn't be harassed and should stand up for yourself |

the cops will not be getting involved unless it's to tell your former employee to stop harassing you and to change their locks. Nothing that you have posted doing is illegal, don't sweat it |

I think that you should have hand delivered the keys to them in the first place, instead of mailing them. Anyways beyond that if they keep harassing you call the police, you are not even sure who the text message was from. |

i think you should go to the post office and get proof you mailed it and show it to them, they should let up. the key may be lost in the mail. once you prove you mailed it, if they still call the police, then they will not be able to take you. just don't worry about it. |
|

There Are No Accidents
 |
It's an idle threat. This isn't a criminal matter, and the cops aren't going to involve themselves in this. Your dad has an excellent suggestion, though. But if you can't see yourself doing this...Ignore the calls and go on with your life. |

See if you can get a recommendation from them.
Oh and they are extremely naive. You could send it back but copy it before so what makes them feel so safe about having the key? |

That family is a joke. Tell them to get over themselves. You didn't steal the key. They gave it to you right? They have no proof you didn't return it. I would file harrasment charges. |

They are illegally harassing you, but just ignore them. Police involvement at this stage would be a waste of time and energy for everybody.
You didn't commit a crime so don't worry about it. If it had been me, after their harassment, I would've flushed their key and told them where they could go to find it.
In fact your former employers are rather stupid if they aren't going to change their locks. |
|

Miraclecutie
 |
Well first of all if it is not the grandmother's number and that person continues to threaten you in such a way either you should ignore it and go to them in person on Monday (when you expect the key to be delivered) and confront them. If not, you could call the cops and say that there is a person that keeps calling you in a threatening tone. |
