You should have taken her registration number and reported her,as you say us mere mortals would get nicked if caught doing that, even if she was using the phone for work ,she should have been using the hands free set the car is fitted with. |

You don't think she was responding to the dispatcher about a 999 call do you? How dare she go about her job! |

Why are people so hard on our law enforcement officers? They are extremely busy people who do great things for us. I have had a very horrible very personal experience with a male police officer myself that I don't even wish to ever think about again but he is one very rotten apple and is now fired for what he did to me. For the most part they are wonderful people and deserve our respect. They have things they have to discuss with other officers and detectives and have to use cell phones and radios. I trust an officer driving while talking on a cell much more than a 16 year old just chatting about the latest crush they have. That's the major reason that law was passed. |

She could have been using it for work, don't make assumptions. But she might've been using it for personal use, I don't know, and unless you talked to her, you don't know either. |

Are you being deliberately obtuse?
Police officers use communications all the time while driving......they must.
Why would you put them in the same category with the empty headed bimbos and bimbettes yakking away on the freeway to discuss tonights favorite TV show? |

and how else is she supposed to be on patrol but still respond to emergencies? Maybe the next time you need police help no one will come cause they can't respond and drive at the same time. Don't make assumptions. |

The police are often exempt from certain aspects of traffic law providing they are performing their duty. Now prove she was not performing her duty and taking a shout to go somewhere or obtaining information about a suspicious car |

disgraceful!
she should be at home cooking dinner for her husband not on the streets driving around.
Whats the world coming to? |

Yeah they do make that model now, they have for about 40 years.
One of the things they train us is when talking to dispatch via the radio about a call, establish a phone connection ASAP as to not tie up the radio. |

Ahh I can see by the answers to this question the British are back!! The 999 was a dead give away!! Its 911 on this side of the pond.
She was probably using he mobile to obtain more information as not to tie up the radio for other calls to be dispatched on or recieved. It's not always a personal call as most mere mortals think. |

she's checking up on you! watch out she might be makin that 999 call lol |

These are not mobile phones, they are radios. They are exempt from law because they can be operated without having to look at them whilst driving. |

Because a regular "mortal's" work is different than a police officer's work. There are reasons that a police officer can need to talk on a cell phone while driving. They sometimes use them to bypass scanners that other people can be listening to while talking about sensitive information. They might need to keep driving while talking because they might be on their way to help someone or following a suspicious car. There is nothing that a normal person would need to be talking about while they're still in a moving vehicle. With police, there are.
Don't presume to understand their job unless you've done it. It's ridiculous to think that a police officer would need to pull their car over every time they need to convey information to each other. They wouldn't be able to do their job. |

I saw a police woman & I thought , oh to be in the arms of the law, She was stunningly beautiful, but if she had been using a mobile phone I would have made a citizens arrest. |

She was most probably using her airwave radio which looks very similar to a mobile phone. The police can use these whilst driving similar to cabbies using their radios as they are 2 way, i.e you have to press to speak and release to recieve the other persons conversation. |

Just like my friend who works as a Gunner on Death Row at San Quentin. It is not that odd to see women in the workforce and doing what was primarily a Man's job once upon a day. More power to them. |

There is a difference between using a mobile phone and using a radio. If it was a mobile phone then she was wrong to do that. If it was a radio then she has not committed an offence.
Officers cannot be expected to stop every time to acknowledge a message. What if they were travelling to an immediate incident and had to stop ten times to acknowledge updates. Clearly that would have implications on response times. Not to mention the carnage that would cause when blue lighting to a job.... oh stop to answer the radio.... off again....oh stop again..... the poor old public would not know what to do.
How would you conduct a pursuit if single crewed? I'm an advanced driver and part of the training was to conduct a pursuit and give a radio commentary at the same time.
Officers often need to transmit messages to comms rooms and each other. It would be impracticle to stop it. likewise it would be dangerous not to concentrate on the road. I am not advocating officers taking their eye off the ball.
If officers are blue lighting to a job they may switch sirens off prior to being in earshot so that they do not disturb the offender. Likewise they may switch lights off when they arrive in the area to commence an area search. Obviously I am highlighting that there are many situations where the public would be unaware of what the officers were doing / responding to.
EDIT - Londoner, we're talking about passing short messages, not chatting to your girlfriend about where she wants to go tonight, or what she should wear. Yes I am giving a police response because I'm a cop...doh!!! If a cop knocked a child down because they were not concentrating on the road then they get what they deserve. |

How many times are you going to ask this question, funny you only see the police using a phone never see any other member of the public using the phone. |

2 things, First thing being that a cell phone is a must in police work, ie. calls that should not be heard by the public listening to scanners (bomb threats in public places) 2. being that sometimes police work is boring believe or not and you may have to call someone to keep you from going crazy and killing time. |

She is experienced in talking and driving only a woman can accomplish two or three tasks at the same time and still be in control. it is very few people who can take instruction via the phone annd still describe what they are doing and seeing at the same time. intelligence it is a wonderful thing. |

In order to use a radio while driving in the USA, you need to be a licensed HAM radio operator, which police are not.
CB operators, for instance, are not licensed HAM radio operators. |

You should have taken down her registration number and dialled 999 to reported her for careless driving - Ha!
Oh I love Bear the 'UK Cop' response - and what if she runs down a child whilst on her radio? Oh of course, one doesn't have time to stop eh |
