Detectives work LOOOOOOOONG unsociable hours. Their hours are more unsociable than a response officer on shift.
If your priority is spending time with wife and kids, i would forget it.
Also... you need to be a police officer on uniformed beat for at least 2 years before you are even considered for a detective role and even then the competition is fierce. |

If you do become a detective, you will NOT have as much time with your family as you'd like. This being there is a lot of work / time involved with det. work. Things like survalance, actually investigations, followup work, and yes there is a lot of paperwork involved. Paperwork as in typing out affidavits so you can obtain search warrants. BUT, if you are serious then go for it. It CAN BE very rewarding. Oh and to be a detective you got to start with being a cop first. |
