Im 20 yrs old, I will turn 21 in June this year. I haven't gone to school I did finish High school and am Physically in shape. What do I have to do to start the process so I can make my family proud and become a Police officer. How can I go to an academy?

Join the military and become a MP first, the competition is very to become peace officer you need some college education or military experience to even be considered in the top level of candidates. |

Check with local departments (police, sheriff, etc...) to find out their basic requirements. If you meet those, then obtain an application and send it in. If accepted, you'll go through the following:
1. Written exam
2. Oral boards/interview
3. Physical agility test
4. Background investigation
5. Polygraph exam
6. Medical exam
7. Psychological exam
After you pass all of that, you go to the academy. Once you graduate from the academy and complete your field training time, you're now "fully qualified" as an officer.

Most if not all police departments require 60 college units. You don't get to just lie around and do nothing for a couple years and then become a cop. There is some work on your part.
The person who said join the military is also correct. A military background, especially as an MP is also good. But just "wanting to go in as soon as possible" ain't gonna do it. |
