is this a problem i am a very honorable person just wrote some bad checks when i was like 21. i really want to be a police officer, i just dont want this to creep up and bite me in the a!! the department i am thinking of joining has a minimum req. of no class b misdemeaners within 10 years if i am honest with them and explain that i made a mistake would they let it slide. ive not been in trouble since nor any tickets or accidents.

ok let me clarify i would not ever lie on any police app. i served honorably in the military for 9 years and now i am a civilian again. i DO NOT break the law, ever would the department let it slide because it was a first offense and nothing has happened since?

The department I work at would automatically DQ you. However, if you have found a department that actually spells out that limitation - 'no class b misdemeanors within 10 years' - then perhaps you have a shot there.
In any event, lying on an application is almost always an immediate DQ, and if you can trust anyone to find out about an arrest in your past it will be a police background investigator. Come clean, offer a reasonable explanation (which must also be a truthful explanation) and hope for the best. It will be up to that department to review the incident and determine if your explanation is reasonable, if the crime is serious, and whether or not you meet their minimum requirements. |

Call up a lawyer and see if you can get it sealed. I had a theft charge and got it sealed. Your not a bad person!! Everyone makes mistakes and we have to learn from them. Don't be honest with them, they will not understand. There are rules, regulations and certain criterias that people have to meet and the chances are you wont be hired if you dont.There is always a way around- If you know someone who can get you in, then your good to go. Should you first look up a police academy? You cant get hired without proper training? Hope I didnt create doubt for you.. Hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck. |
