I wish to become a police officer, prefferbly armed but i dont know the requirements to be an armed officer.?

In the UK you do not automatically get assigned to an armed unit, I do not think they would take a new recruit straight out of training. Once you're a police officer you would have to ask about requirements for joining. I think you would need a few years experience first.

I think that it depends on what state you live in, but I am pretty sure that you have to be 21 to become a police officer. before you can become one you have to go through a police acadamy. Some police departments have their own and some have one that they will send you through.

It will depend on where you live but.
1. Join the police
2. Get through you 2 years probabtion period with flying colours
3. Wait for the deptartment to advertise for the position.
4. Apply for it.
5. Get recomended by your line manager
6. You will have to go through a selection process. About 50% pass this.
7. If you get selected - Go through the Inital Firearms Course. 60 - 70 % fail this course.
8. If you pass then you are a police firearms officer.

Hope this helps - plus one tip - when you join the police don't walk in on you first day shouting that you want to be a Firearms Officer as they will think that you are mentally unstable and not give you a gun as long as you have a hole in your ***.

You will join as a Police Constable,After training,you will do a two year probationary period.Once that is over, before becoming a firearms officer,you will need experience within the force. There are training courses available for specialist areas within the force.Devon and Cornwall is a centre of excellence for firearms training, with officers from other forces right across the country to attend courses.
Basic guidelines for applicants
As you might imagine, applicant guidelines are fairly comprehensive, but here are a few highlights:
there are no minimum or maximum height requirements
there is no formal educational requirement, but you will have to pass written tests
you must be either a British Citizen, a citizen of the EU or other states in the EEA, or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national with indefinite leave to remain in the UK
although you may still be eligible to join the police service if you have minor convictions/cautions, there are certain offences and conditions that will make you ineligible. If you are at all unsure, contact your chosen force for more information.
you must physically and mentally be able to undertake police duties

Get fit before you apply
One of the most rigorous elements of our screening process is the physical fitness training. Because our officers must be able to move quickly while carrying a lot of heavy equipment, they have to be in pretty good shape.
If you pass the assessment process, you will then have to take a physical fitness test. To pass, you will need to be reasonably fit, and able to run short distances fairly quickly. Later you will also have to pass a medical examination. Always remember to check with your chosen force if you have any specific concerns.
Why not go to your local police station,and ask to have a chat with someone. They will be very happy to guide you, and point you in the right direction. Good luck in your future,hope it all goes well.

I'm presuming you are British and wanting to join the police here?
They don't usualy take youuntil early 20s (get some life experience first). It's a long and tortuous recruitment process - maybe 6-8 months from first sending in an application. No real qualifications needed but you need to pass an aptitude test and a fitness test. Training is about 3 months with a two-year probation. Only after all that can you specialise and think about joining Armed Response.
Why do you want to be armed specifically? A gun fetish is not the best reason to join the police force here (maybe the army?).

Before you can become an armed officer you'd better get used to doing soooooo much paperwork as a probabtionary constable for two years. During this time you can look forward to the delights of doing all the rubbish stuff the old sweats can't be ars**d to do. You can sit in the front office taking endless lost mobile phone crime reports and then there's the delights of being the gaoler... yes, it's so fulfilling waking up muggers and drunks and giving them a free breakfast when you know it's going to be at least another 3 hours before you get yours and even then you'll have to pay for it!!!
So if struggling on the floor with a drunk who's just wet himself, or standing on a crime scene in the middle of winter at 2 in the morning is your thing.....Come and join us!
Then you can put your application in for a shots course.

My advice to you, would be to go and see your local Chief , Constable , tell him your wishes and reasons for wanting to join the Police Force, I'm sure he will only be too happy to give you all the advice that he can. It's so nice to here that there are young people like you around, wanting to uphold the law, instead of finding ways to break it. I wish you all the Luck in the world.

Hi Scott, i am in a similar situation as i wish to be Airport Police Squad. U can apply at 18 and a 1/2 (this is wen they will accept u) but usually want life experience first then once u have completed your interview and recruitment process you haver to be a Beat PC for 2 years to complete your probabtionary period. Once this has been done, courses and xfers are available to join specific areas of the force. AS an armed officer, you will under go tests every 6 kmonths to make sure u are still up for the job, inc fitness.

Join the Police as you would a new copper, as far as Fire-arms are concerned yes they do have them,
but i would advise on some experience within the force first before opting to go in as a fire-arms officer,
Then you would need to be licenced to carry/use.
In the British army, all soldiers (inc Military Police) are given a competency test in use of fire arms, called an Annual Personal Weapons Test.

Every police officer must complete his 2 year probationary period before he can apply for specialist roles.. Such as firearms,traffic,dog,mounted branch etc.

Even then there are strict guide lines and applications which are checked at each stage requiring approval.

Hi Scott , you don`t say where you are from , but my advice to you is check first thing tomorrow with your career adviser at your collage / school they will give you advice . also if you are in the UK log on to police could you .com they may be something on their site to help you . Also you could try approaching a police officer and ask him / her the best way to go about it ! GOOD LUCK !

Why not just ask at your local Police Headquarters they should be able to tell you the requirements that are needed. Good Luck.

i'm guessing they have quite strict psychological criteria ... if you apply saying "i wanna be an armed police officer" they might think "hold on this guys a bit too much into guns...."

all police officers are armed....security guards are not always armed
as far as joining a force you need to complete a police academy and taking criminal justice courses would be helpful...but you do have to be 21 to be a sworn officer.
Contact your local PD or SO and ask if they have a cadet program for people who are under 21, and if they have specific requirements outside of what I have previously stated.

Even if I knew I don't think I'd tell you. The scariest cop I ever knew had a morbid curiosity about dead bodies.
I worry about somebody who doesn't want to be just a cop, but WANTS, very much, to be armed. Go ahead but I hope they see you coming.
