I am fairly fluent in German and fluent in French. If i am detained by the police (fairly common around here) do i have to speak english to them? I am a US citizen and its probably obvious that my native language is English. Can the police arrest me simply for choosing not to speak English to them?

You are under no obligation to speak to them at all. If you are driving, you only need to produce your drivers license and registration and/or insurance if asked.
You can not be arrested for not speaking English, but it can make the traffic stop take much longer.
Keep in mind officers have a lot of discretion, and may be unsure if he going to write a warning or a ticket. If he thinks you are intentionally messing with him, it is not likely you will get a warning. As entertaining as speaking French or German may be, this could easily backfire. |

Here we go...
No, you do not have to speak english to the police in the event that you were pulled over. You can speak pig latin and get away with it. Hell, you could be a mime and not say jack and be fine. Police would get a translator out to the scene or maybe just say screw it and continue in english. BUT!!!.... if you would like your hypothetical situation to go smoothly, i highly suggest that you speak english and get with the program, otherwise, things will not be as easy as you would like.
