He's allowed to *ask* what color your underwear is. If we're only asking, you're always free to refuse.
I see Combatcop above me would disagree with that, but I can't help wonder if that's state law or department policy. Certainly could be a state law, but that would be very odd in my opinion. |

You are probably in the states but in the UK if a police officer/constable asks for your details and you refuse its an arrestable offence. |

He is allowed to ask for everyone's ID, yes.
However, depending on what state you're in and where you're driving, non-drivers might not be required to show ID. (Ohio you're only required to show ID if on the premises of an airport, bus terminal, train station, ordering from the bar in a liquor-serving establishment, and possibly when on government property.) |

Not everywhere. In WA, an officer needs to have reasonable suspicion that the passenger(s) are committing some sort of infraction or other violation of the law. If they have done nothing wrong, I cannot ask for their id, question or otherwise speak with them if it involves any kind of investigation. |
