No, if the reason for breaking the door was unjustified,(ie-wrong house) then you can bill the city for a replacement. Other words it's just another cost of the crime that was done. We do try to secure the property before we leave though.

Nope, they break them, they don't fix them. They don't clean up after crimes or crime scene investigations either. It is really hard getting decomp out of the carpet.

No. Police aren't liable for any damages they cause to your home/personal property when they are required to come onto or search your premises. If they have to break down a door to save somebody, or arrest them, it's your responsibility.

in uk they are obliged to pay for damages caused if you can prove that you wern't guilty and that you wern't given a chance to open the door for you

Everyone needs to watch Dallas SWAT. That will give you some perspective on this question. I have watched them basically destroy the homes they enter. Of course, this is unique in that the show mainly drug houses being raided. But, if they have reason to enter, they will. Any damage is not there problem.

It depends. If they have a warrant, they have the ability to search your house and since a person must be in the residence in order to do a search, they probably knocked on the door to let you know that they were there unless it was somethin serious. In that case, they do not need to replace the door for property damage but they will charge whoever is responsible for the crime with the bill to further compensate you. If there was nothing illegally done and nobody could be charged, then you have all rights to ask them for compensation for the door or you will see them in court at a later date...

If they have a search warrant for your property, they can enter it at will. They will not fix your door, nor clean up the mess that a search creates.

If, however, the warrant is for the neighbors house, and they enter yours instead, they will repair the damage.

This is the cost of living in a free society. Think about your "rights" if you lived in Tibet, for example.

They should! The cops crashed into our parked car infront of our house when we were out of town... When they came back they had to pay for the car.. stupid police... at least it was my sister's car and not mine
