No, and the police are not supposed to disclose your name. Just the same, if you yourself have been in trouble with the police, they may not "respect" your wish to remain anonymous. Also, they may need to call you to testify if they have no other witnesses. If you feel you are in danger, go stay out of state with a relative that you trust.

No. I never burn my rats. I get as much info as I can from the user I just busted. I then work the dealer using the info I was given. Info like where he sells, lives, hangs out, what he drives, who is girl is, etc. I have to gain my own probable cause for arresting him. I don't just run over and slap the cuffs on the dealer because a meth head told me he was dealing. I do surveillance and make my own case against him.

It can be as simple as me pulling him over for a broken tail light and seeing that he's high. I then arrest him for being high, search his car and find the dope, scales, baggies, lists, etc...Dealer busted. Easy day.

The rat's name is NEVER used in any part of the bust. Its not necessary at all when I make the case myself.

Only if you give information that is used as evidence against the dealer. Lots of informants give info on dealers and their name is never revealed, that's why they are called confidential. If you are directly involved in the arrest and they have to use your actions or statements to prove their case then the dealer has a right to discovery.

When ever your name is in the criminal justice system for anything even traffic violations it becomes public record that means anybody can go to the state website and pull up anything that you have been involved in including snitching. for your safety it will be a whole lot better not to tell on anyone because if you snitch you will probably still get jail time plus when you get back out on the street you have to look over your shoulder all the time. Lord knows I am not telling you to obstruct justice but just try not to get involved.

Usually, we try to "pad" an informant and obtain an independent basis for an arrest based upon the information provided by the informant.

This is because once the drug dealer is charged with a crime, he has a right to access copies of all reports, investigative data, and evidence that will be used against him in court.

In my jurisdiction, we do not disclose the identity of an informant without a court order and a fight.

If you are arrested for a drug offense and you "give up" your dealer in exchange for leniency, we have several methods of getting him without disclosing your identity. But, I'm not going to list them here for obvious reason.

If you are concerned about this, you need to contact the agent/officer you spoke with. If you are a direct witness to a transaction which resulted in new charges against the dealer, you will likely have to testify and you identity will be revealed (unless the prosecution dismisses the charges).

On the other hand, if the agents used your information to gain an independent reason to arrest the dealer, you will likely remain anonymous.

If you provided such information to the agents, I'm surprised that they didn't already explain this to you. If they haven't, call them. You need to know this stuff!!!

Usually not only are the witnesses forced to come to court to testify in some cases there names are written on the summons, so really its no secret to the person that is going to jail who it is.

The only way he will find out who ratted him out is if takes it to trial, then you will be called to testify against him...ie. you will be a witness for the state. thats why they call it turning states evidence.. I say take it like a man. your the one that got caught. don't be a narc

Yes because thier lawer needs to prepare a defense. However there is such a thing as the witness protection program. Make sure they're gonna give you that before you give up the name.

Well I'm about to do something I never thought I would do but I'm a veteran of iraqi freedom for the army And I'm an addict addicted to opiats and benzos. I have a severe case of ptsd and I'm headed to afghanistan and I'm going to turn on a drug dealer who isn't a addict they're addicted to selling dope To addict and have never done anything for their country except try and make as much money Hustling oxys and roxys to people that have drug problems. So the way I see it is these people don't give a shit About me and if given the chance the dealer would do the same exact thing to me. They got no love For me and vice versa. I'm not about to do 7-10 yrs in a federal penitentary and ruin my life that I put on the line on a Daily basis in iraq just because I have to much pride to give up someone who's a pos low life drug dealer and is teaching their 15 year old kid how to deal.
