One way or the other, she should be taught a lesson!
Shop-lifting is not a joke but a serious crime! A crime for which we all must pay!
All big stores include in their price calculation a loss of an average of 10% thru theft! That means, with 10% of every item that we buy we all are subsidising these shop-lifters!
What they steal is not the money of the store! It is our money! |

A felony stays with you for a life time....If she is convicted. Typically, a Felony is stealing goods with a value of over $500.00.
She will be fortunate if she gets Community service and Probation... The fact that she is a student is irrelevant. Have her court appointed attorney Plea-bargain the crime to a misdemeanor The fact that she is 18 hurts her....she is an adult.

She will more than likely be spending time in jail, unless they decide to charge her with a misdemeanor and place her on probation. California also has three strikes, your out legislation, so they take felonies quite seriously |

You ask, I answer

hopefully she goes to jail. she needs to spend some time in there, or else she'll just do it again. she made the wrong choice, she's got to pay the penalty. |

Her charges will probably be reduced to misdemeanor charges and if all the facts are as you state, a pre sentence report completed by the probation department will probably recommend Probation with possible restitution, and even some intermittent weekends in jail, A prison sentence is not likely in a case of this type and it is unlikely that she will get one!! |

First offense?
She will probably be allowed to plead out to a lesser charge, and get probation.
It's too bad. She will have that on her record for the rest of her life, plus, she will never be able to get a job with any financial institution, retail company or with the federal government. |

Chances are she will not see jail time. Probation probably. If she is a first time offender the State will probably offer her a Pre Trail Intervention Program, which if she completes will wipe her record clean. |

Fairly good chance, she needs a good attorney |

it depends if she gets convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor. (it can be reduced to a misdemeanor) but more than likely she will get an alternative sentence like ankle monitoring, work project or community service. the jails in california are really full so only the people that can't post bail or the criminals that commit more serious offenses are in jail f.y.i.!!! |

I would hope she get 24 confinement and 60 probation, not to mention fines, court costs and restitution. |
