There is an incident where someone is murdered. The police have proof that an individual was at the scene of the crime when it happened but that's all the proof and info they have. If the individual refuses to cooperate with police, giving them absolutely no information about what happened, what can the police charge the person with?

If they could place him at the scene he can be charged with murder, however they would need substantial evidence to get a conviction. If the police wanted to get information they would probably charge the person with obstruction of justice and use that as a lever to make him talk. |

I don't know what the term is like if it's called conspiracy but they charge him something that means cooperating in the murder since he might have information that could help convict the murderer and is keeping it to himself most likely to protect the murderer from getting caught, so he is assisting in the murder. |

They probably could and most likely would try to charge said individual with obstruction of justice. This is a common tactic by law enforcement to coerce information from an individual. It behooves each citizen to know the laws they're governed by. Just because someone is present at the time of a crime/murder doesn't mean they're involved or saw what happened. Failing to give information on what, if anything they know weighs heavily on that persons suspect lack and or character however. |
