Also if criminal has a gun but the police don't, and the guy is holding the gun out in their face what would they do? Radio for backup or keep their hands up or run?

Not sure where you live, but; if you point a gun at a cop that don't have a gun, the cop ONLY doesn't have a gun because he/she chose to be without. Likewise, he/she has a buddy looking at your forehead through a rifle scope and............well the "red mist" looks cool through the scope. Don't worry.....you won't even hear the shot. |

I can't imagine a situation where I WOULDN'T have at least one gun. On duty or off, most of the people I work with carry their weapons. In Texas, we don't take kindly to folks pointing guns at us, and it would most likey end with the bad guy/girl dying of severe acute lead poisoning via speed injection. (getting shot) |

I don't believe I've ever heard of an US law enforcement agency that doesn't require it's officers to be armed when on duty. Maybe in England they could answer this question better.
If the criminal is armed, the only reasonable response is to be armed. Being unarmed allows the criminal to be empowered while the officer is then in a position of weakness. This is a poor tactic for stopping crime. I don't think anywhere in the US that such a thing is embraced by law enforcement, not even in the bleeding heart parts of the country. |

Police will rarely enter any situation without a gun. If they know somebody in there is armed, they're certainly going to bring their weapon. Also, any criminal that holds a gun to a cop is probably going to find himself dead very soon. |
