The answers you give your own personal doctor are confidential, so unless you've released the information to your employer, no, they won't know. AND a lot of people "use alcohol", so why would it threaten your ability to get a job?

It is a standard medical question that physicians ask. Don't be overly concerned. Medical records are protected. It is important for your own life that you can be honest with your physician...otherwise it can have dire consequences.

Anything you tell your Dr does go in your file.

I work in Health Insurance and yes it is all there.

Employers can't base hiring on your medical records. The only way an employer would know is if you give them your medical records. If you're not planning on getting a job just to fake an injury you have nothing to work with.

If people got fired if they drank, the unemployment rate would be 85%.

No, I don't think so. There's a privacy act that they can't disclose info. about patients. The only way they could is if you were involved in a crime/accident involving alcohol.

no it does not. that is something that is your business and they ask for health issues

The doctor will always have that on record, but will only use it for medical purposes. For example, s/he will not perscribe medicine that interacts badly with alcohol or will warn you not to drink while on it.

However, due to HEPA, the doctor is federally bound to not share that information. Everything shared between doctor and patient is considered highly confidential, and the doctor can lose his license for breaking that code of confidentiallity.

You're in the clear for that job, the doctor can't say a word.

While this information is put on your file because it has to be, the doctor by law will keep this confidential. The only way she'd tell anyone is if you were putting yourself at danger, or if your life was at risk, big issues like that. Then, the doctor could tell your parents, if you're under 18. Even so, if you have no history of DUI or intoxication misdemeanors, then I wouldn't worry.

If you're 18 or older, when you get a job, it is usually required to get a background check. This will tell your employer your history, such as past residences, any crimes committed (if any), etc. If you are required to get a physical, your employer just wants to ensure that you are healthy enough to perform the tasks required. Some employers do require a drug test, but I don't think they are looking for alcohol in these tests - they are looking for illegal narcotics like marijuana, cocaine, and heroin. If for some reason or another you are tested for alcohol, tell your employer that it won't happen again and prove it by not drinking, or at least not showing up to work drunk. This truly applies to those who are under 21.

Unless you are a raging alcoholic, and as long as you are healthy, you should be able to get a job. I wish you the best of luck!

employers don't look at your medical records. those are confidential and for your medical history.

Dennis
Absolutely not. What you say to a doctor unless you tell him you are about to go on a killing spree is confidential.

It goes in your 'Medical History'.
This is supposed to be 'Privacy Protected'.
In general it will be kept confidential unless you yourself release it.
