Probably not. Most precincts will make you use a standard issue gun, or give you options of one to buy, then make you buy it. The only ones that won't are the very small towns that would like to use the budget money for something else.
But you won't have complete free reign on whatever you want. |

Everyone is different. The agency I work for requires I purchase my own weapon and provided me with a list of manufacturers I could use. Glock, Smith and Wesson. The shotgun and mini 14 rifle were issued to me by my department. But since I'm on SWAT, I was allowed to purchase and use my own AR-15 during SWAT calls. |

Read somewhere that LAPD requires their recruits to by their own as long as they are from Beretta, Glock, or Smith&Wesson. |

where i live, the department issues you a weapon. Most of the time it is a glock or Smith&Wesson. but when your off duty you can carry your purchased weapon. |

The Logical Approach

Of course, if you have the means to. If someone is shooting at you then why not? |

It depends on the department. Some issue duty weapons. Many allow you to supply your own from a list of approved weapons. A few may allow you to use whatever weapon you wish. |

That depends, for many police force's you have to supply your own hand gun. For the larger force's they will have their own armory and supply you with a fire arm. |

If you are asking if you can buy your own gun, most of the police officers I know, do. It has to be regulation, though. You just can't go out and buy a .357 Magnum and use that. I'm talking about Philadelphia. My father, who was on the job starting in 1950, always bought his own gun. |

In the bay area, the departments issue you a duty weapon. However, you can use your own personal gun as a back up weapon. Depending on your departments policy.. |

This depends on the department. Most departments issue a sidearm, forward thinking departments issue a sidearm and a back up gun (BUG). This is done for standardization purposes, same sidearm, same ammunition, same armor course, same holsters, same magazines, same basic firearm instruction for all.
There are Departments, like LAPD, that issue officers a sidearm, but let them chose to carry another firearm on there approved list if they qualify with it. Some Departments have an approved list that officers have to go out and buy a sidearm on the list.
BUGs are usually left to the officer if they are allowed by the department at all. Some have approved firearms others basics ideas like nothing smaller than a .38 special or .380 ACP. |

Depends, what size department your working for and what your assigned to that day. If your a patrol officer they are issued firearms, but say your working the desk for the day answering calls and what not, your allowed to carry your own firearm. |

depends on what department you are on. smaller department you can use them. most of the larger departments issue a hand gun. |

Your department MAY allow you to carry your own back up side arm, but they usually have a strict list of ones you can use and what mods you can have on them as well. It doesnt matter what division you're in or if you're behind a desk or in a car on the street, you can carry a back up. This is because there is always a chance that if you need to draw your weapon, chances are that your target has more fire power than you, and you need to be somewhat well equipped |

A cop always has a Second gun. I am sure if it came down to his life it would not matter who's gun he used. |

While not completely sure, I would say no, you are only allowed to carry your service weapon. |

i would say that you can only use it when you're dealing with a person who has a gun in like an armed robbery or something |
