this question came up in conversation and we were wondering, what happens when you're caught smoking in a non-smoking zone (in Illinois specifically, but if you know about other states then that's fine)? would you just get a fine? would it go on your record as a local ordinance? would you get arrested?

Just like a ticket for littering or parking. Yes a fine.
Sure there is a record but it is not on "your record" or rap sheet.
If there is a local ordinance against smoking above and beyond the state law and they actually arrest you (not ticket you) locally for that then that goes on your record.
Except for being arrested on public transit for smoking (a law that has been in effect for at least 75 years) and taken to jail I have never heard of anyone getting a criminal record for smoking. Even in the public transit case only if your acting like an A hole and won't take the ticket do you get arrested. |

The law is so poorly written that nobody can figure out how the penalties should work. It's been running through the courts for over a year.
