If you get to prison but inmates see you as a scared "fish" (target), what are the chances you will be shanked?

Inmates to not shank anyone for the fun of it. It requires a pretty serious infraction of somekind before they will take that risk. Most of the time, inmates will keep an eye on new guys for the first few days to see what they are made of...but generally do not bother them. The best thing to do is to be respectful without coming off as a weenie. Respect...especially of gang members seems to be a touchy point. Depending on the facility, there is not as much stuff going down as you might think. Inmates quickly form "families" within their housing area so they tend to protect one another.

It's not shanking that you would need to worry about. That is a possibility, but they can find other, worse uses for you.

Believe me, you will prefer a 'shanking' over a gang 'cornholing.'

I would find the biggest guy in the prison right off the bat and do your best to beat him senseless to let the other prisoners know that you are not to be f-cked with.

Nothing is automatic about this situation. It would be better to try not to act so scared, but usually you will be put into a unit (mod) with others of similar offense history. That's not a guarantee by all means, but just as an example, a first time felon who is in for something like DUI, Theft or some other non violent offense won't be put in the same housing units as someone in for more violent offenses.

Being bullied or taken advantag eof are more of a problem than shanking for someone coming in being visibly scared. Unless of course you're scared because you are in or associated with a gang. That comes with it's own set of dangers.

You have been watching TOOOOO much TV. Most newbies in prison will be approached and offered protection and those persons will take a portion of their food and other privileges as payment for protection until they can contribute by offering protection themselves or other services like legal council, teaching, art work, etc.

There are plenty of opportunities for inmates to attack others than the newbies due to gang affiliation. Plus they get more cred for attacking a seasoned gang banger than a nobody.
