It is not required to be certified as a a police officer. In our department, it is not mandatory to be tased during our training to carry one. They highly encourage it and most people do but nobody forces you. If you can make it through the police academy, being tased is a walk in the park, a painful walk int the park!

If you want to become a police officer, then no. However, if you are hired as a police officer and the department you work for carries Tasers and you wish to carry one, then yes.

Depends on the department, the senior staff, and policies.

I'd say, go into it thinking that you will be tased and pepper sprayed. Then if neither is done to you it will be a pleasant surprise!

Apparently the answer will vary between different states and different departments. We were not required to be tased, but everyone volunteered. The only ones that had to be tased were the certified instructors.

Depends if your department issues the taser and if you want to carry it. To have it issued, you must feel the effects first.

Yep, if you planning on carrying the weapon. It's mostly to show the officer what happens when they use it. Just in case they get tased themselves.

It's not too bad though, hell I've been tased. It hurts like hell when they do it but the pain instantly goes away when they let go of the trigger. For me when I got it in the leg (this was because I volunteered for it, I know stupid lol) it felt like my bones in my leg turned into hot metal rods and were just spinning in my leg. In short it hurt like a *bleep*.

They do not make you get tased...

But, to be able to carry a taser you have to go through taser certification...and in that process ...yes indeed you are tased.

And let me tell you it is no walk in the park....Hurts like a *BLLEP*

Yeah, you have to get tazed. And in some states, you have to take a shot in the arm from a standard issue police pistol to acquire one...

BS aside, a friend of mine was training to be an officer, and she had to be tazed. She didn't make it clear if she really had to be tazed, or if it was in order to receive a tazer. When I asked her about it, she shrugged as if it were nothing. If reality TV has taught me anything, getting tazed is a b***h, and I don't want to experience it. I would just say, be prepared in your police career, to be tazed.

If you want to carry the weapon, part of the certification phase is to get tazed with the weapon. Same goes for OC Spray.

Not always. If you are going to carry the taser you must be trained in its use and that requires being tased to understand the effects of the weapon. Not all agencies require their officers to carry the taser so you can become a police officer without being tased but you can't carry it on duty without being tased.

The same goes for chemical agents like OC (pepper spray).

...and yeah, they both hurt like heck but I would rather be tased than sprayed any day!

Not to become a police officer, but if you are going to carry a taser, then yes, they make you get tased so you know what the person is feeling when you do it to them.

Do you want to use a taser if you become a cop?
Do you want to use pepper spray if you become a cop?
Now lets address the facts, if you don't want to get either tasered or pepper sprayed how can you honestly do this to another human being not knowing the full effects of these police tactics? Shame on you if you think you can use these insterments of defence without fully knowing the full effects.
Maybe you should stick to the job with the phrase, "would you like fries with that?"

Many places do. Understanding those effects is a very useful knowledge to gain. But if you can't stand getting tased, you are not really tough enough to be a cop. The real world is worse.

I wish more cops would just stick to traditional guns -- better chance of saving taxpayer $$ on court and prison costs in the future.
